It’s not Hill House, Bly, or Midnight Mass.
The Midnight Club is not really horror. It has horror elements but it’s mostly teen drama. If you’re expecting a series along the lines of Mike Flanagan’s previous Netflix horror series’, you may be disappointed. But if you go into it knowing that it’s based on young-adult rather than classic literature, perhaps you can appreciate it for what it is. The Midnight Club is based on material by highly successful YA author Christopher Pike, not on classic ghost stories by writers like Shirley Jackson or Henry James.Since I knew going in what the source material is, I was expecting a teen drama with some horror elements, and that’s exactly what this is. It started pretty strong, lots of mystery, and the characters drew me in. Most of the cast are very good, and the series is beautifully shot. There’s no mistaking that this is 100% Mike Flanagan. And like everything Flanagan does, it’s heavy with emotion (at times too heavy).
Unfortunately, it does get slow about halfway through the season, it’s a bit hard to follow at times, and it just doesn’t have the same magic that Hill House, Bly or Midnight Mass do. I still found it moving and entertaining, but I didn’t love it. There are too many unanswered questions and disconnected ideas. Rather than moving slowly and leaving all those unanswered questions for a probable season 2, I would have preferred Flanagan had stuck to his formula of one-season stories that move quickly and wrap up nicely in the end.
I have great respect for Mike Flanagan and his vision and ability to tell a story with both horror and heart. Though by no means terrible, The Midnight Club is not his best. I still have high hopes for The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan has proven what he can do with classic horror. I can’t wait to see what he does with the works of Poe.

Ghost hour
No pun intended – I am actually not even sure if that is what the midnight hour is called. Might be a german thing – but I think you get the general idea I am trying to convey. I reckon the new review guidelines make it harder for some to just write one note things – and yet still you’ll find people venting – while not having watched the whole thing! I admit I do not and will never get that. Especially when it comes to a show that is fully available from the start. But let’s not get stuck with that. If you are a fan of Mike Flanigan, you may find a few easter eggs in this show. And you will also find a few of his recurring actors in it. But the main cast is a younger one. Which may confuse some people I reckon – the story adds to the confusion. Or rather its conclusion – or is it one? Because there may be coming more … which would mean I’d have to add/edit this current review … let’s see what Netflix decides.
Acting is really good, the very first episode that really does have a high bar … has also have a guiness world record apparently! For most jump scares in an episode or per minute or something. But it would not be a Flanigan project if it didn’t make fun of all those jump scares. I am not sure if you can say that the show is breaking the fourth wall. It is more like acknowledging it – being smart about it. Maybe too smart for some I reckon – admitting to storytelling and techniques people use to lure people in … to make them interested. Maybe even some critique? Who knows – or rather you can read it into it.
What I like apart from the story: how the show is able to make you feel for the people that are terminally ill. We all have to die – we forget about it or we rather push those thoughts aside, to the back. But if you have a date or you know something is looming above your head (literally at some points – so no pun intended) … it is something different. It also really goes against stereotypes – or tries to as much as possible.
Of course you will have some cliches – but even those will get broken down. The angry girl as some call her (and I say some, because I am certain that quite a few people will react to her that way – you are supposed to) .. but there is more to her. And it will be revealed … if you stick with the show of course.
But there is also way more to the other characters … be it the ones that seem friendly and those who may seem offensive or angry … there are more layers here than that. And we would not want to have it any other way … great effects, good storytelling (again no pun intended) … not as tight as Midnight Mass (at least for me), but still very good indeed.
