Outstanding Lestat!
Although in the beginning I was put off a bit about a more modern day story that was only loosely based on Anne’s novel… I have now come LOVE Sam’s version of Lestat… His stature, his voice, his walk, his ruthlessness, his delivery… OUTSTANDING! He blows me away, absolutely love.I have come to also embrace the new story, I do think Anne would have enjoyed this, especially Lestat.
Claudia and Louis of course are also amazing, I look forward to where this story will take us. I can certainly understand why so many people are not into this version as it is not exactly what she wrote, but if you look long enough, listen closely you will see her there. Again, I think she would have been over the moon with Sam’s rendition.
A spectacular and beautiful update
: Interview With The Vampire is absolutely breathtaking. You have to accept it takes necessary liberties with the source material. Because a 50 years old book were the lead character owns slaves DOES need an update. The creators did it in a very clever, realistic and touching way (as opposed to say Bridgerton!).From the lush soundtrack, insane production details, masterful special effects, this is a complete success to me. This also may be the first big budget show about an openly queer relationship and that’s why people should celebrate rather than complaining about what has/ has not been in the books.
It keeps the gothic vibe and camp flamboyance of the original movie but adds gorgeous visuals and dramatic musical queues echoing Coppola’s Dracula (particularly some crossfade effects when Lestat gets inside Louis mind). Just by itself, the priest scene is a masterpiece of vampire violence. There is a quiet pace in the episodes matching the emotional journey doubled with clever writing. I find the humor very well balanced with the more gruesome moments as it is always tricky when you do horror comedy.
Even the cynicism of the journalist which echoes our own cynicism and blasé attitude towards vampire stories fits perfectly the concept. As a metaphor of the viewer, you can tell he slowly falls for Louis magnetism.
People should learn to embrace an adaptation when a magistral effort is done to make it relevant in 2022 while keeping the fondamental elements in place. For almost 30 years we have watched many vampire romances, all of them combining in various ways, love, sex, violence and surnatural elements to the point where you could even question the relevancy of a new version of Anne Rice’s novel.
So I applaud AMC for making a superb, modern and exciting adaptation and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
