A life-long story about space, but first of all about people
The project “For the Sake of all mankind” interested me primarily in alternative history. I have always admired the authors who skillfully gave out interesting stories in which the world went on a different development, turning at some point to a different vector. And the plot, where the first Soviet cosmonauts turned out to be on the moon, and not American ones, aroused my special interest. In addition, the project belongs to Apple TV+. This is also a kind of quality indicator for me.The story focuses on the 1960s in the first season, where it tells about the space race between eternal rivals: USA and USSR. The project is not devoid of a variety of cranberry cliches, if we talk about the Union shown, but it carefully and respectfully bypasses all the controversial moments of that now distant era. The creators tried to show a balanced world, and not a frequently occurring skew, where some are invariably good guys, and the latter are the scourge of humanity and universal killers and enemies in general. Who and where, everyone will decide for himself.
The series is replete with a lot of events, while showing with interest a lot of different technical aspects related to space research, travel, calculation features and everything related. The creators’ responsible approach to the scientific nature of the issue is felt. I am absolutely not an expert in the space field, but it seemed to me that everything was quite reliable and realistic. I repeat, the screenwriters did everything so that the average viewer understands what is happening in this work and how.
The visual range will please with its quality and scale. Long gone are the years when TV series were something second-rate and that creation, which one way or another is inferior to a full-scale movie. “For the sake of all mankind” is woven from many important and detailed things on the screen. This is, first of all, an excellent transmission of the epochs in which events take place. There are a lot of locations in the series that were made with special attention to detail: rooms, clothes, hairstyles – all this goes back decades, when the Caribbean crisis broke out, when the generation of today’s grandparents was just born, when the Cold War was in full swing. Throughout the seasons, we will also see scientific progress. It manifests itself in spaceships, in spacesuits, in computer technology, even in everyday things used by the heroes of the presented world.
All of the above aspects of the work are very important for the series, but I do not consider them the main ones. Important, mandatory, but not the main ones. The dominant role in the series, in my opinion, is occupied by the stories of people who are direct participants in the events in the picture. There are dozens of actors who are closely intertwined with each other, interact, love, confront, make friends, compete and necessarily discover a new world for the sake of all mankind.
All this is possible thanks to the excellent work of the team of screenwriters. They skillfully balance on the edge of science fiction and drama, place their characters in a variety of situations, demonstrate their evolution, life path for even decades. This is very interesting to watch. There are their favorites, some of the characters are frankly annoying, but in general this is a balanced world where every character is important, a world in which you see real people. They struggle, they learn to live in a new changing world, love and betray, defend the interests of certain groups, are pioneers, turning the dreams of ordinary people about traveling to the stars into reality. Let these be the first steps for our civilization, but one day, as I want to believe, the discovery of new worlds is ahead, somewhere out there, among other suns.
The cast is a great team, whose characters are sure to be remembered. I would hardly be able to single out anyone. Each character is important in its own way and is perfectly played by the corresponding actor and actress. And it doesn’t matter how big or scarlet a person’s role is, whether he has a lot of screen time or not. Everyone made a significant contribution, which allowed me to love this project so much.
The stories in the series are undoubtedly interesting, little predictable and necessarily able to surprise the viewer. When it seems that you have anticipated the subsequent development of events, then the plot twist is sure to surprise. “For the Sake of all mankind” is undoubtedly a great work. It was created with a soul, it was shot by an excellent team. After each released season, I look forward to the next one, which makes a new time leap and brings the events in the series closer to our time. I hope that soon it will be possible to compare how different the worlds will be: our real and fictional serial, where everything is possible.
10 out of 10.
Hugely enjoyable
As a long-standing sci-fi fan, I know how difficult near sci-fi is; you need a lot of work to make it credible and realistic while keeping it fantastic. For All Mankind is not even near sci-fi, it is “past sci-fi” as its action is placed between 1969 and 1974 and it offers and alternate history of the conquest of the moon. The exercise was extremely ambitious and it worked pretty well in my view. Technically irreproachable, emotionally intense and, more importantly, always staying-with the exception of very few slippages and farfetched situations – on a very realistic and credible plane. Good casting, decent performances and above all lush production values complete what was for me a hugely enjoyable series.
