Should Be Avoided Like a Zombie Plague
This doddering parody of zombie movies has more in common with Jerry Warren than George Romero, with a relentlessly static camera and threadbare sets capturing local TV station-type interviews of the people involved in a “Z Girl” living dead beauty pageant. Set in a time after a zombie invasion has been tamed by the living and where the remaining undead are exploited, there is some humor in the concept of a TV network dedicated to a dead girl competition in singing, acting, etc. Unfortunately, ZOMBIE BEAUTY PAGEANT fails to exploit those possibilities, weighed down by a script that runs out the clock with a talkathon featuring smirking, hey-don’t-look-at-the-camera performances. The zombie girls aren’t threatening enough to be scary, and we never see much of the pageant itself. The in-jokes and unfunny asides made by the inept cast are equal in artistry to the slow motion direction. Apparently, there is an entire Z-movie series that should be avoided like a zombie plague.

Romero would be proud–A must see for fans of the genre
This movie is a testament to what good writing, directing and acting can accomplish. Look for more from these people in the future. The sets are minimal, the story is told thru the actors words, body language and action. The zombies are just a plot tool, although this movie adds to the genre with zombie on zombie violence / killing / eating. The real story is the satire. A negative look into beauty pageants and the entertainment industry as a whole. The sleazy nature of the executives, staff, handlers and hangers on as well as the sexual exploitation of children. Pop culture and politics are ridiculed. There is subtle humor, Benny on the spot with the olive and the pick axe. At least three scenes where the viewer is left guessing. For me this built anticipation and drew me further into the story. The scenes that followed answered my questions. No accident- that’s good writing. The show must and does go on. The smirk on Heather Z’s face as she holds a pregnancy test to her abdomen, at the first closing, speaks volumes, raises questions and the possibility of squeal(s).
