Zoku Owarimonogatari
Reflecting on the completed “Monogatari” series, it recently came to me that “Zuko Owarimonogatari” may contain more fanservice than any other series instalment. Not merely for its trademark cleavage and up-skirt shots (the number of which meets series standards), but for its concept in general.

With the adventures of Koyomi Araragi having reached their conclusion in “Owarimonogatari”, “Zoku” is something of an epilogue. The story has little new to offer. “Zoku” plays with a mirror world concept that mainly serves to explicate the development its characters have undergone throughout the series’ three seasons. Normally, I tend to oppose such pandering, but there is a lot to like in this case. Unlike that other superfluous “Monogatari” instalment, “Nekomonogatari Kuro”, “Zoku” is humorous and very well-paced, and naturally the visuals are a treat.

The writers are completely self-indulgent in both their goal and their means, and they don’t even pretend they are not. “Zoku” is meant as a final chance for viewers to revel in the “Monogatari” world and its characters. And who can resist such an opportunity, having come all this way?
