A lovely version of this enduring literary work.
The Jack London perennial gets an emotionally rousing Disney adaptation here, with Ethan Hawke cast as Jack, who arrives in the Yukon Valley in the late 19th century to see to his late fathers’ gold claim. He falls in with two experienced prospectors, Alex (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and “Skunker” (Seymour Cassel), and despite some misadventures at the outset, proves himself hearty enough for the task. At the same time, the film regales us with the journey of an adorable wolf-dog hybrid (played by Jed), who ends up forced into dog fighting by unrepentant villain “Beauty” Smith (veteran movie bad guy James Remar), but whom Jack works hard to rehabilitate.

A respectful, and respectable, film, “White Fang” is just one of a couple of attempts at this material over the decades. But even though it’s given the Disney treatment (and is directed by Randal Kleiser of “Grease” fame), your youngest family members may need some things explained to them. It may get a little intense for the small fry, but it ultimately demonstrates a compassion for wildlife and an admiration for nature. Remar and his flunkies (played by Bill Moseley and Clint Youngreen, the latter one of the films’ animal trainers) are repugnant bad guys, but not as scary as they could have been had the film been designed more for adults. And the heroes are inherently likeable chaps who win our sympathies just as surely as the title canine. Hawke and Brandauer make a good team, Remar is fun as always, Cassel once again delivers an ingratiating performance, and Jed (whom we previously saw in “The Thing” and “The Journey of Natty Gann”) is a truly talented star. That’s Bart the Bear (also to be seen in “The Great Outdoors”, “The Bear”, and “The Edge”) who menaces Hawke at one point.

Wonderfully shot on genuine Alaska locations (Tony Pierce-Roberts was the cinematographer and one of the cameramen), this receives a lovely score from Basil Poledouris, and warms the heart quite effectively, sending its audience away with tears of joy. Highly recommended to dog and wolf lovers; the picture ends with a kind of editorial stating that it’s unfortunate that the wolf species continues to be rather demonized by some people to this day.
