Reviews:

Laughed so hard at the absurdity and ridiculousness that is this film.
I haven’t laughed so much watching a movie in a while. That was A RIDE.

I started out with an open mind and the story was semi intriguing.

I critique films from two perspectives, one being the production value and overall look. The second being the content, plot, writing, acting, etc.

This film was disappointing in both of those criteria.

It doesn’t look great. Over exposed in every shot. The lighting is harsh is every scene. Lighting and color temps don’t have continuity.

Everything was either super green or super purple. You could play a drinking game with the amount of lens flairs is this film. What happened to making films that look decent?

The biggest distraction is that every shot is composed with a shallow depth of field, where the background is out of focus.

Personally I do like a good bokeh and shallow depth in a tasteful way, or when the shot calls for it, but the entire film? No thanks. Even heavy dialog scenes between two actors and the focus was just on one, with the other actor and rest of the picture blown out is very distracting.

The scene between the Williams and lutz, outside during the sunset. I’m PRETTY sure they shot the turnaround at a different time of day from the sunset shots. I’m 95% sure they did morning for evening for that turnaround for the same scene, same conversation. Lighting didn’t match at all. Can we have some continuity please?

(SPOILER ALERT)

Now onto the story, and holy moly it was something. I wasn’t prepared for the rollercoaster of a film.

Zero background on ANY character.

As a whole, the plot and characters are a true testament for the whole problem with religion and the hypocrisy in that way of thinking.

Absolutely ridiculous. This entire plot could have been fixed with some logical thinking, but then we wouldn’t have had this masterpiece of a film now would we?

The awkward violent scenes coming out of left field? Because there was no background on any character, I was guessing the whole time and couldn’t decide if Lutz was a lowlife criminal, or a nice guy who accidentally killed Williams’ wife.

The angry drinking and punching the wall scene came out of nowhere (again, zero background about how we’re supposed to see this character) Now don’t misunderstand me, I’m a sucker for dark gritty violence. But it didn’t fit the vibe and caught me so off guard.

Obviously Williams made every single mistake possible as a parent, and as a person, all because he’s a pastor who’s obligated to “make the right choices”. Williams betrayed his own family and his son’s trust, and the dropped him him to become best friends with his mothers murderer?

Williams drove his son to murder Lutz at the end because of his decision to forgive the guy who murdered his wife, all while wondering why his son is being driven away. (Again with the weirdly violent knife scene when the son murders lutz?) Yikes.

Williams is absolutely clueless and refuses to actually talk to his son, or have any kind of relationship with him. He wonders where he went wrong as a father, absolutely clueless that all of it is entirely his fault.

Then takes the fall for the murder his son commits and leaves his son alone? I got excited for a moment hoping that Pastor is going to cover up a murder and get away with it!

And then Heche? I kept forgetting about her plot. After she comes back the second or third time I shouted “holy moly I forgot about her!” Also couldn’t figure out if her plot was past, present or future until close to the end.

My favorite scene by far is the over dramatic “cleanup” scene at the plot of land where Williams and lutz move around the same pieces of wood and metal for 5 minutes while clapping their gloves together. The music and tone came out of nowhere. It looked like a wrangler jeans or a Chevy truck commercial. I had to rewatch this scene twice it was so funny.

Can we talk about the SPLIT SCREEN?

Like they suddenly wanted to do a chose your own adventure thing and then NOT MENTION IT AGAIN ONCE.

I was floored. We rewatched that twice.

And then it just ended?? THERE WAS NO ENDING. I wanted at least another 30+ minutes to explain the rest of the plot.

I was absolutely floored.

There are two options that could have been potential ways to save this film. (I’m thinking optimistically here)

if they removed the religious redemption story and done it as a slasher horror parody with the current plot.

The second option would to have written a plot that made any logical sense from a Christian film perspective.

Nothing of substance, but a fun watch nonetheless even though I won’t get that hour and thirty minutes of my life back.
