Awful and unconvincing
I’m giving three stars as the film is at least trying to tackle what’s clearly a difficult subject in its country. However the decision to have the actors speak in English, and awfully stilted English at that, was a grotesque mistake. I didn’t hear a single “don’t” or “won’t”. It was like hearing a piece translated by someone with English as a second language from the twenties of the last century. “I cannot/will not /do not” and so on.Then the acting. Hampered by a terrible script and speaking in a second language, wooden is not the word for it. Leaden is more like it. To compensate, the actors resorted to histrionics and overwrought styles that were so over the top as to be risible and added to the heaviness of the experience.
The plot could have been half satisfactory were it not for the preceeding points. As it was I had to fast forward and watched a few scenes as I just couldn’t hack seeing 110 minutes of what should have been left on the cutting room floor. If only this had been filmed in one of the local languages!
I can’t recommend this at all.
