Arty but uneven Sherlock Holmes mystery
The first half, grim, serious and artistically directed (as is the entire movie – with lots of tilted camera angles), ranks up there with the best of the series. But when the element of hypnotism is introduced, the plot becomes hokey and obvious (I bet even reading the words “Holmes” and “hypnotism” together you can guess the manner in which he will outmaneuver the villains at the end). Henry Daniell and Hillary Brooke are well-cast. but for all their nefarious planning, they fall (in one case, literally….) for the oldest trick in the book. **1/2 out of 4.
