***Haunting mysteries on the coast of Maine with Emily Browning and Elizabeth Banks***After her mother dies in a tragedy, a teen girl (Emily Browning) is sent to a mental hospital. Upon returning to her father’s mansion on the coast of Maine, she reunites with her older sister (Arielle Kebbel) and tries to get along with her dad’s new girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks), her mother’s former nurse, who appears to be taking over. David Strathairn plays the father, a successful author.
“The Uninvited” (2009) is a mystery/horror that combines elements of “The Sixth Sense” (1999), “Half Light” (2006) and “The Ring” (2002), although it’s a little more subdued than the latter. If you like the haunting tone of those movies and the spectacular locations of the latter two, you’ll appreciate it. Browning with her ultra-cute face was 20 during filming, but looks 14. Meanwhile Banks is effective as the biyatch gold-digger and Strathairn is convincing as the clueless father.
The story plays out in a too-predicable manner. If you saw the trailer beforehand it basically tells you everything you need to know. But not really: The last 15 minutes pulls the rug out with some surprising revelations. I heard there was a twist before viewing and went over various possibilities in my mind while watching, but the movie fooled me. Great job on this front. Not everything is as it appears. I’d say more, but I don’t want to spoil it.
My relatively high rating is due to the lingering power of the film’s message on individual perception. It’s potent and applicable stuff, expertly executed.
The film doesn’t overstay its welcome at a mere 1 hour, 27 minutes. It wasn’t shot in the Northeast, however, but obviously British Columbia (Bowen Island). It’s an American remake of the Korean film “A Tale of Two Sisters” (2003).
GRADE: B+/A-
Okay psychological thriller featuring a fine performance by Emily Browning. This is one I saw back in ’09 and pretty much feel the same way I did back then. Nothing great but worth checking out I suppose. **3.0/5**
The negative reviews that this film received really surprise me.
For my part, I find it excellent. I who usually hate horror movies, I really enjoyed The Uninvited, because it’s not a horror movie, precisely. I would rather say that it’s a thriller, particularly well done, which features Emily Browning, an amazing actress who plays well throughout the film. All the supporting roles are equally compelling, from the creepy stepmother to the protective sister and the ambiguous father. But the real strenght of The Uninvited is its ending : completely unexpected, it is very well brought and remains logical with everything that has been showed to us previously, if we watch the whole thing again. A very nice surprise for me! 8/10.
Great Remake
After the death of her ill mother in a dreadful fire followed by an explosion in the boat house where she was living, the young teenager Anna (Emily Browning) tries to commit suicide cutting her wrists and is sent to a mental institution for treatment. Ten months later, Anna still has a blackout about what had happened in that night but her psychiatric Dr. Silberling (Dean Paul Gibson) discharges her telling that she has resolved her issues. Her father and successful writer Steven (David Strathairn) brings her back home in an isolated mansion nearby the coast and Anna finds that the former nurse of her mother, Rachel Summers (Elizabeth Banks), is her stepmother now. Anna meets her beloved sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel) swimming in the sea and she discovers that Steven has not delivered the letters and CDs that Alex had sent to her. Along the days, Anna is haunted by ghosts and she believes that Rachel killed her mother. Alex and she decide to look for evidences to prove that Rachel is a greedy murderer and Anna discovers the truth about the fire in the boat house.I usually hate remakes, but “The Uninvited” is a great remake of the excellent but confused “Janghwa, Hongryeon” (a.k.a. “The Tale of the Two Sisters”). I liked to see in the Extras of the DVD the interview with the writers of the screenplay, producers and directors Charles and Thomas Guard since they have been very honest in their words recognizing the merits of the original Asian movie that was the base of their script. Further, they had the skill of using the original storyline with an intriguing supernatural and non-complicated plot and an excellent plot point that provides a satisfactory explanation for the events that triggered the whole process in Anna’s mind. I do not recall seeing the sweet Emily Browning in another movie, but she proves that she is an excellent actress, participating in practically every scene and giving credibility to Anna. The efficient David Strathairn and Elizabeth Banks and the also unknown Arielle Kebbel have also great performances in this highly recommended supernatural feature. My vote is eight.
