Hoodoo you think you are Mr Freeman…
Truly unbelievable that the esteemed actor who gave us one of the best serial killer flicks of all-time. Morgan Freeman and Se7en, agreed to take part in this utter dog of a movie. Shame on you Morgan!

Like many, i got duped by Freeman’s involvement, but was admittedly wary beforehand upon seeing B movie/VOD perennial Scott Hauser starring. However, this ludicrous, disjointed serial killer meets black magic effort was even worse than one could ever imagine. It’s a total incoherent mess from beginning to laughable end.

Aside from the overall poor execution, quite why the pointless Rome angle was tacked on is more of a mystery than the woeful script itself. The acting is wooden, the suspense is non-existent and the endgame is shockingly bad, and not in a good way. The only positive things i can say are that the lighting/cinematography are fairly decent and it’s thankfully short at 90 minutes.

Yep, if you even get through it, hide this travesty away in the’ hour and a half i will never get back’ file and blow the cobwebs off Silence of the Lambs, Se7en and Psycho again instead until someone (anyone) comes up with a decent murder mystery again… it’s been far too long hasn’t it… and the wait goes on…

Underrated Suspense Gem
Cole Hauser has a pattern as an actor, he chose movies with unique characteristics. Most of them currently B-Movies and low budget, but a lot of hidden gems. The Ritual Killer is one one of them.

The Ritual Killer is a slow burner with slow pace and fast action then falls into slow pace again until it reached the end with a surprise, a classical suspense thriller.

The story felt like an novel adaptation. Cole Hauser was a detective with traumatic past if losing his daughter due to negligence.

Morgan Freeman was a bit out of place in his character, a professor of Adrican studies who half way to the movie helped Hausee’s character. His character was enigmatic, however the enigma wasn’t shining bright, rather dim lit.

The villain was never the center piece, but he was convincingly scary.

The limited budget was very apparent, no exploration to the world of the villains shaman-ship. No extravagant killing scenes. No lengthened action scenes. Yet, the story has potential. In my humble opinion, it should be a mini series about 3-4 episodes, exploring the villain’s venture in Italy, then how he entered US.

The killing violence was minimized, only the results are partly shown, but still in R rated category. The directorial works was too limited by the budget, so there are too many scenes and plots that can be explored further to increase the suspense.

Overall, The Ritual Killer is a good and enjoyable movie, unfortunately their budget is too low.
