Our story
I have someone very close to me that was raped in college. This young lady had an amazing future. She had a scholarship to private school in Connecticut and was voted “most likely to succeed” and then a college scholarship. She was on the Dean’s list every semester. Was Editor of paper, was so far advanced in French that she taught French in college for credits. She had a leading role in college play and volunteered at a local center for troubled kids. She was a powerhouse.

Long story short, she was raped by a star basketball player while she was tutoring him, so he could stay in school.

She made it through that same year- still on top of her game. However, the following fall when she returned to the college her world came crashing down.

One evening the Dean called because there was an emergency and we needed to come get her. We immediately left and arrived at the Dean’s house…we brought her home and she never returned. No one knew what happened to her until years later. That was in the 1990s and she’s still struggling.

I did not write this for bragging rights- I need to tell her story because she still cannot. It’s heartbreaking.

This film is so important I think it should be mandatory for college orientation – for ALL students. Rape is prevalent on every college campus in the United States. We all need to stand up for our sisters and our daughters and teach our sons and brothers. It has devastating effects on the entire family. She was just trying to help a kid stay in school and he paid her back by stealing her future.
