Great movie!
I think that for those who do not know what happened in Cuba during the revolution, this movie is a great film to watch (no matter what the critics believe). Not only do we learn how it happened, we also learn about the struggles of the Cuban people. As in a work of art, everything in this movie has meaning or significance. The story is real and is expressed with sentiment… a romantic, but also nostalgic feeling. Also, the movie captured many details of the Cuban culture (including family values). Finally, I’d like to add that to watch a movie about Cuba without the glamorizing of the revolution or any of its leaders is like a breath of fresh air. Andy Garcia is a genius!
Nice to look at but story is somewhat shallow and naive.
The Lost City has some nice cinematography and GREAT soundtrack to offer. But ultimately it all serves as vehicle to deliver harsh condemnation of Cuban Revolution. That is for me where this movie is falling apart – it paints everything in such unrealistic colors. Everything before revolution is one amazing fairytale. Everything after is a nightmare. When protagonist rejects his lover that decides that “there are things in life greater than us” and starts working for Castro regime you cannot tell if it is because his property was confiscated or because his childhood friend (who worked as police officer) was executed. He does not seem to have much of political beliefs himself and in the days of Batista he seems to be content with not rocking the boat. It does not bother him that his friend was working for regime that was killing patriots – those things did not exist in his little world of cabaret “Tropical” before his own brothers were arrested and then executed by the regime. Still, his response seemed to be focused on “taking care” of his brother’s widow and having good time. Until the revolution comes crashing in and destroying the fairytale. I think that the weakest part of the movie was cartoonish stereotypes of revolutionaries as bearded, green uniform-clad, bloodthirsty thugs spewing some idiotic slogans about “it belongs to revolution now”. That is a bad caricature and that is where movie loses a lot of credibility. Overall I had hard time sympathizing with Fico’s character because director decided to force me into sympathy by making Fico this “nice guy” who does not try to make to many enemies, loves family, loves cabaret, loves his brothers and his brother’s widow, has a beautiful life and tries to to stay away from politics. And then suddenly big bad wolf of Revolution takes his beautiful life away from him. And you want to say “and?…”. Anyways – for me the nostalgic picture of Cuba before the revolution – however unrealistic it may be was worth the price of admission. It was just so…. NICE. Rest of the movie was so-so.
