Check out my video review here: https://youtu.be/0UPR6YUu1ZMI like to think of Asian cinema as having a few very distinct markets. There’s the Japanese – known for their horror, monster and obscure movies. South East Asia gives us very distinct gory horrors and action films, while China, Hong Kong and Taiwan give us a mish-mash of genres – good action films, good horror films, but bland comedies and movies with mostly incoherent storylines.
But Korea gives us something more unique – essentially the Asian version of Hollywood. Remarkable horror films like The Host and Train to Busan, popular romantic comedy movies like My Sassy Girl, interest award films like Parasite – and of course the outstanding Sympathy trilogy in Old boy and Sympathy for Mr and Lady Vengeance.
But Korean thrillers are something else entirely. And if you enjoyed the spectacular I Saw The Devil – then I am confident you will love every second of The Gangster The Cop The Devil.

A fast-paced movie that is never less than entertaining and energetic, featuring two engaging leads, hard-hitting action, haunting music – and a humorous twist at the ending.10/10
Ambiguous, Atmospheric and Relief.
09/10/2019 (3) The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil (2019) 7.3/10Non-spoiler-ish review 🙂
A serial killer with a heartless soul roaming around towns. A cop that is dedicated to catching him at all costs. And a gangster leader with a special mission to annihilate this serial killer.
This piece of work has more goods than bads. I would start off by stating the fact that the idea of the movie is fairly original or at least, well-executed.
There was a mutual relationship that gives viewers comedic relieves every now and then. This light up the mood of the movie in lots of times.
There are some acts of the movie that felt rushed. Some Infos seem to be setting up plot lines and major future reveals but they weren’t. There were characters that seem to be important but then forgotten.
The director and the writers have good directions in the dialogues and setting up motives for characters. However, some of the scenes were strolled by too quickly for me to feel the burden or the punishment level of certain actions.
Nevertheless, the movie is pretty alright alright. Some flaws every now and then but overall, quite entertaining and satisfying. A good thriller/action flick.
For this year, I was pretty impressed with suspenseful/ action-comedy Korean movies like Parasite and the Hit-and-Run squad. They were both pretty good and worth mentioning really.
Entertaining
It’s very tense and some emotional scenes worked much better than expected. The first half of it is good, almost as you were watching a 24 episode (without terrorists…or Jack Bauer). But there are also many stupid decisions in the last act, so many things that would never happen, so many clichés…still entertaining.
