Plot: It’s Jolie’s first time going back home to Louisiana since her devastating break-up with Foster Burke. Seeing him is inevitable as their parents run the town’s annual Christmas Market together, but when she discovers Foster is bringing home a new girlfriend, Jolie cannot bear the thought of going home alone and seeing them together. Her best friend Naomi suggests that Jolie bring her flaky brother, Jack, home for Christmas as he has no plans this year. Jolie, a professional web designer, is hesitant; so, Naomi, a lawyer, creates a Christmas contract to give them both something they want—a buffer for those awkward moments around Jolie’s ex and a website to help sell Jack’s upcoming novel. Unbeknownst to them, the Christmas contract proves to be so much more than what they signed up for.

A plot we all know with a special touch from real life friends.
Jolie (Hilarie Burton) is going home for the holidays and she finds out that her ex-boyfriend, who she has a long history with, is taking home his new girlfriend. So her best friend Naomi (Danneel Ackles) suggest taking her brother Jack (Robert Buckley) with her back to Louisiana to pretend they have a relationship.I love One Tree Hill so I was looking forward to this. 5 people from the cast coming together for a Lifetime movie was everything (one was a surprise to me, even if he was only a couple of minutes).
The movie was good. The secondary characters were amazing. The chemistry was off the charts (of course, they are friends off screen). The plot was nothing special: we have seen this thousands of times. But Hilarie and Robert (Tyler, Danneel and Antwon) made it special for me.
My only complain was the loud music during certain scenes and the lack of scenes with Danneel and Antwon. I’m pretty sure any Hallmark/Lifetime fan will enjoy it. But One Tree Hills fans will love it.
(now give us a Joy and James movie please!)
Can you really see love by one person for another?
It’s a common plot device where friends or family say “I can tell you love her by the way you look at her.” I usually think it’s corny, but once in a while, one or both of the actors in a movie like this show just that. Somehow, Hilarie Burton had that look and Robert Buckley came close to matching it. That’s chemistry.I like these movies best when you get to watch the relationship develop, when the leads get plenty of screen time together. For some that might be boring, but in this movie, they did it just right. It was fun. You could almost fall in love along with them.
I often complain when a story follows too many of the rom/com formulas. This movie “hangs a lantern on it”, or them, by showing you the list and making it a key plot device. But then for a Christmas movie, because of the location it lacks some of the colder weather typical things like snowball fights and so forth.
I felt sorry for Foster because he was so pathetic. almost from the start. But when THAT happened, well, no longer.
The movie shows us a little about life and customs in that area and I assume it’s typical. I know that in most of the South, when I was growing up, you definitely said “Yes sir” and “Yes mam”. But we see far more that just that.
The ending is sweet, or as some would call it sappy. So here’s a “sappy” warning. If you don’t like it, then you know you can skip this one.
There’s a short musical performance by Tyler Hilton which eventually gets pushed to the background by character dialogue.
Note about loud background noise or soundtrack: I didn’t notice anything anywhere close. I wonder what causes it because people complain about it in a lot of TV movies. It must not originate from the master copy of the movie, at least not in this one.
