Horror fun with killer plot and performances! 8/10
So it’s close to Halloween and some friends of mine and I thought we’d treat ourselves to a fun, brainless horror flick at home. “Reaper” turned out to be the choice of the night, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was fun but not quite as brainless as I had presumed. What I dug most about this film is that none of the characters were clean- cut caricatures. They were flawed, conniving crooks all in need of redemption, and Mr. Titular Reaper is the one who has to show these no good doers the consequence of their action. Something about the way these nefarious personalities collided and are forced to survive the night together reminded me of “From Dusk Til Dawn,” still til this day one of Tarantino’s best. The fact that badass Trejo is in both might be another reason why both films have a somewhat similar edge.
I also really enjoyed the performances here. Not everyday do you get a slasher flick with some good actors playing roles that fit them like a glove. Trejo is in fine form as a tough guy with a conscience, Jones is in solid menacing mode as a crime lord, Busey is funny as hell as a drunken salesman, Beesley is terrific as our lead gutsy hitchhiker, Jurdi is an engaging smooth criminal, Judge is ferocious as a trigger happy cop, and Henry is appropriately creepy and convincing as one strange motel attendant (someone call the Bates motel and tell them they have some competition)!!!
This ensemble really carries the film, even through its weak moments. Ironically, my least favorite character of the whole show was Reaper himself. A hooded, electro-shock kind of monster, he didn’t add much aside from a few quick kills.
“Reaper” isn’t perfect, but it’s enjoyable as hell. As I mentioned, the main monster is somewhat of a red herring and a let down, but the plot and the performances are what’s really killer. 8/10
Hitchcock meets Rodriguez
An engaging little chiller which pays nice tribute to some of its more high- budget predecessors, “Reaper” is a formula-tested slasher flick with some good performances and a familiar but welcome vibe.A manipulative hitchhiker. A ruthless crime boss. A slick drug dealer. A darkly noble truck driver. A religious zealot. A trigger happy cop. Oh, and I forgot to mention a supernatural killer who looks a bit like Electro Man crossed with Bruce Willis at the end of “Unbreakable.” Combine all of the above and you have the admittedly campy and surprisingly clever “Reaper.” Any movie fan will identify the homages to classics like “Psycho,” “The Shining,” “From Dusk til Dawn,” and “Shocker.” Both mystery thriller and horror elements are nicely combined, resulting in a film that’s a little Hitchcock, a little Rodriguez, and mostly just a lot of fun.
