Plot: Hochelaga, 2048. It’s been over 20 years since Quebec finally gained independence through the efforts of a movement led by the powerful Charles Maurice. His eventual rise to Prime Minister, however, may not have been all that legal. This major political upheaval will shake up the social classes and bring out demonic creatures that attack the population. One man will become the beacon of peace amongst the chaos overtaking this new country. That man is Zach, Charles Maurice’s son, an irresponsible bum who becomes the leader of an elite team, whose mission is to re-establish peace between the ninjas, punks and rat-people who are trying to survive this zombie infestation.

Enjoyable enough but still rather problematic
Years after a zombie apocalypse, a lazy fighter forced to lead other troops into battle against the zombies in their midst makes off with the leader of a resistance movement opposing his father’s rule but finds it all completely undone by the emergence of a new threat in their ranks. This was quite a fun if somewhat problematic effort. One of the more enjoyable and engaging aspects of this one is the fact that there’s an undeniable energy featured throughout here. The general idea of the storyline here, where the zombie apocalypse has already taken place and the country is overrun by the creatures gives this a strong starting point to really hang some fun scenes throughout here. That this comes from the point of big action scenes where the troops have their different confrontations with all manner of foes, from the encounters with the street thugs in the abandoned city to the frenzied hand-to-hand battle with the deviant ninja clan out in the wilderness and the interlude at the end where they join forces with the third clan of rebels against the zombies and the invading here all manage to give this one a lot to like while also managing to feature the kind of low-budget charm that’s readily apparent throughout here. The scenes are basically filled with such weak and silly special effects here featuring all the limbs being ripped off, the blood spurting in streams and splashing all over the place while the terrible CGI for laser blasts, explosions and other big tangents go off all over the place make for a rather fun time with the inherent goofiness of it all. This tries to tell a coherent story here but the way it goes about everything here is with the corniest effects possible which is what not only has a lot to life but also manages to bring about it’s biggest drawback against it. By being so goofy and silly in its over-the-top nature throughout here, the film is so tonally all over the place that it feels too ambitious for what it’s trying to be. The majority of the film is built around utterly cheesy and low-budget quality work, yet there’s way too much time here that comes with him wandering around with the different groups simply complaining about everything or thinking he’s in complete control of the situation only to make things worse due to incompetence that it makes the film stand out even more with the dull pace highlighting the weak work when it shows up. That is another big problem, in that while the cheesiness does make it fun at times there’s a lot of times where it doesn’t exploit that potential due to the rather lame look of the effect on-screen and it really does hold it back. Likewise, there’s also the troublesome political message at play here that might not be relatable for all fans as the outright localized setting is quite hard to get into. Otherwise, this one does have its positive points.

Diabolically poor
PUNK FU ZOMBIE is an indie-style zombie comedy spoof horror flick that hails from Canada. It was made in the French language and features a post-apocalyptic world in which a band of soldiers battle against overwhelming hordes of the undead. Most of this plays out as an entirely cheap scattershot comedy with incessantly over the top acting and the occasional prosthetic gore effect. I found the whole thing diabolically poor, worse even than a rival Troma picture.
