Reviews:

What a bunch of corn
I gave this movie 5 stars only because I’m a sucker for B pictures from the 30’s & 40’s. However, this was the corniest movie I’ve seen in a long time. I’m sure the reason this movie was made was to provide some kind of public service to encourage folks to adopt older children. Since it was made in 1940, there may have been a lot of those types of children who were victims of the Depression. I don’t really know because I wasn’t born until the 1950’s. The acting was just okay but it was all so earnest that it didn’t seem real. I think Edith Fellowes probably has a following but she was not as good an actress as say Shirley Temple or Margaret O’Brien. She wasn’t even as good as Deanna Durbin (who I find grating on many levels.) Unless you like cornball in all this glory, I would avoid this movie.

You won’t need sugar for a week after seeing this.
This tries very hard to make the audience believe that the 17 year old wheelchair bound Edith Fellows is only thirteen. Too young for a young actress to be trying to hide her real age. She’s in a foundling home with younger brother Billy Lee who is adopted a week before she is, but he’s a bad boy and quickly sent back. Her adoptive parents are very good to her, but when Fellows finds out what happened with her brother, it’s obvious as to what will transpire before the film concludes. Her adoptive parents arrange for an operation for her which doesn’t go as planned.

Everybody is so nice in this, including the orphanage staff, and you don’t get to see Lee misbehaving, kids fighting as to who will be paraded by perspective parents or just being kids, and there’s no cruel matron present who hates kids. The foundling home is also beautifully kept up. Only when Fellows is said to be going to be sent to the state institution does this remotely show any kind of negativity. A speech from a politician on a radio show make the heartfelt plea for childless parents to consider adoption, as if it was like taking a trip to the grocery store. This isn’t a bad film, just not a very realistic one. A good ensemble of character actors (including Mary Gordon as the kind housekeeper) does help. With all the twists and turns before the conclusion, I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry.
