Entertaining sequel to a classic
“Night of the Demons 2” is a really impressive and exciting sequel.**SPOILERS**
Preparing for a party, Bibi, (Christi Harris) Perry, (Robert Jayne) Johnny, (Johnny Moran) Rick, (Rick Peters) Kurt, (Ladd York) Mouse, (Merle Kennedy) Terri, (Christine Taylor) and Shirley Finnerty, (Zoe Trilling) hear about a local legend several years ago about a party invaded by spirits. Due to their youthful exuberance, Father Bob, (Rod McCary) and Sister Gloria, (Jennifer Rhodes) both warn them about doing anything, only for them to sneak out anyway and head to the location told in legend for a secret party. Spending the time trying to find out about the place, they unwittingly release the demonic Angela Franklin, (Amelia Kinkade) from the nether world and bring her back to the campus, where she unleashes a campaign of terror against the students there. Aware of the situation, they trace the possessed students back to the house where they do battle with the creatures to prevent more from succumbing to their deadly whims.
The Good News: This one here was actually pretty good for the most part. The main thing going on with this one is that it’s really bloody and gory, much more so than the already-messy first one. This one includes some really great kills, including several decapitations with a machete, a nail-spiked baseball bat rammed into the face, exploding heads and arms, a couple are hacked to pieces with a machete and then the film’s greatest part, the fact that the destruction of the creatures is done with holy water, causing them to completely melt down into a puddle of blood and goo at the merest contact, and this is turned into rivers and gigantic puddles here with entire sections of the body completely done away with in this manner. The accomplishment of this is also just as good, being done with spectacular fashion and making it look really messy and realistic, as are the majority of the special effects. Beyond the fantastic make-up abilities, there’s also the serpent-creature at the end which is just plain impressive and looks really great. The mixture of the really great-looking snake combined with the front-half being the person, and that this is even given a couple of full-on in-motion shots without the slightest bit of realisticness sacrificed for the shot is an accomplishment. As well, the ability of the series to include where a woman’s breasts perform a special, supernatural trick is repeated here with one that’s just as memorable as the one from the first film and it becomes quite memorable for how it’s pulled off. The last big thing in this one is the really impressive action scenes. The party scene at the campus house is great, with tons of great kills, the insane dancing scene and of course the highlight of the breast-trick. The car part has a great conclusion, and the first visit to the house is great. The last half-hour, which is the final fight against the creatures in the house again is just all-out joy, from the big set-pieces to the rather grand confrontation and all the great suspense that comes from the location and the gore makes it really great. These here are the film’s good parts.
The Bad News: There wasn’t a whole lot to this one that didn’t work. The constant-doubting of the authority figures here is one of them, since there’s very little that can come from such a cliché. It’s not new, doesn’t do anything new with it and really doesn’t work here. The only other flaw to this is that there’s way too much time at the beginning of the film with nothing going on of interest. The flirting on the tennis court, the scenes in the dorm and the party preparation scenes are really of little use to the film other than providing more time before it gets to it’s good parts. It’s got nothing here that it can’t work out elsewhere through something more energetic, and the resulting time really hurts this one a lot. These here are the film’s worst points.
The Final Verdict: One of the least-offensive examples of the 80s cheese-fest around, this one is really good with a lot to like about it. Worthwhile for those who enjoy these kinds of films, a fan of the first one or are looking for a brainless creature feature, while those looking for more should heed caution.
