Have to have (or have had) a lot of existential curiosity to be able to enjoy it
My Dinner with Andre is one of those films you may well hear about, because it is really pretty different. This is the kind of film where you have to have (or have had) a lot of existential curiosity to be able to enjoy it. The less you think you know about this world, the more interesting you will find Andre’s tales to be. Beyond that, you may still find it interesting if you can relate to the quest for meaning and happiness and you think of yourself as a student of human interactions. On the other hand, if you have low tolerance for weirdness and fancy, then you are likely to find yourself to be irritated by it all. There is a question of how high to rate it as a film since it seems to be just a recorded conversation. I rate it down just a bit on that account (seems unfair to other films), though I find there are some subtleties to be picked up on, and I found Wallace Shawn to give a pretty good performance with his sincere and mildly intense reactions to Andre (and at one point finds something to be INCONCEIVABLE!). Recommended to artist- and entrepreneurial types that find themselves often wondering over the edge of the World of Appearances.
Talk Is Cheap
The “plot” begins with Wally (Wallace Shawn) walking through Manhattan. In VO, he talks a lot, about this and that, and explains that he’s en route to a restaurant to have dinner with his old friend Andre. Wally arrives at the expensive restaurant. He leaves his coat with the woman checker. Andre has not arrived yet, so Wally is shown to the bar, where he has a drink. Musicians play subdued music. Andre (Andre Gregory) then arrives. An elderly, white-haired waiter shows the two men to a table. Andre orders quail. Wally makes it two. After small talk, Andre describes his excellent adventure outside the U.S. Captivated, Wally listens to Andre talk and talk and talk.
Forty-six minutes into the “plot”, the waiter brings the main course. On each plate sits a bed of rice, a sprig of parsley, some little round vegetable, and two cooked quail. Wally comments on the quail: “I didn’t know they were so small”. Wally and Andre continue their “intellectual” discourse.
And on and on it goes. Eventually, the two men leave the restaurant. Wally leaves via a cab. In VO, he reflects on the discussion.
Little gems of wisdom can be found in Andre’s jabbering. And if he’d ever shut up, the viewer could meditate on said wisdom. At one point Andre advises Wally: “Cut out all the noise and stop performing all the time You need to cut out the noise.” Yes indeed. If only Andre could abide by his own advice!
I admire the director’s attempt to make a film that is different and unusual. And “My Dinner With Andre” surely is that. But the script’s action is too static to render an effective visual presentation. Mere talk is cheap, and cinematically flat.
The waiter is the only interesting person here. But that quail dinner looks really delicious.
