Missing takes the same formula of Searching and expands on it in every single way. There were so many new folds in technology that were used in the film based on a younger character’s perspective and technological innovations since 2018. The editing was fantastic with some very creative mashups of different apps in certain montages. While the acting is not as good as the original, mainly due to the absence of John Cho, everyone does enough to maintain a sense of believability in the plot. This film for me was much more gripping than the original, the pace and tension was amped up creating a very streamlined viewing experience. I looked at my phone thinking the movie was only 30 minutes in, and it was over an hour, it flew by. There were plenty of twists in this film, some I could see coming and other that I was completely blown away by. Towards the end, a certain plot point was introduced that almost lost me, but it turns it self around and saves it from ruining the entire experience. I wish the ending would have been better, but overall it was great film that improves on the original.Score: 81%

Interesting – like a long TikTok
I’ve never been so disengaged from a story that is actually pretty good. I admire what they’re trying to do here with the film, but the whole thing feels like a very long TikTok rather than a film. It tries to pull you in with short bursts of engaging content while not really hitting any emotional beats. There’s loads of twists and turns, but everything feels flat and never hits an emotional note because get time to see how the characters are feeling. It’s assumed we understand the complexity of their emotions from what we see on the computer screen. And for me, this did not land. I’ve grown up with this technology, but this isn’t how I wanted to watch a film.
It feels like an excellent mystery told the wrong way.
I will say the editing is exceptional, and there was a scene towards the end that was fairly tense, but I felt that because it zoomed in on the cameras rather than seeing a bunch of desktop with other apps open. It’s clear the filmmaker did this on purpose to emphasise and create tension but the rest of the time it feels sorely lacking.
I feel like a bystander watching the story pass me by, rather than feeling engaged with it. I admire what has been attempted but this is not cinema, it’s social media.
Glorified YouTube project
This entire movie is through the POV of a low resolution FaceTime camera and a security camera. Yes this movie is low budget but I didn’t expect they couldn’t afford an actual camera. They zoom in on the screen when they want to focus on a scene and the resolution becomes 240p. The story is cliche and the characters are bland. I don’t know how anyone liked this movie. Catfish the movie had a higher production and they did t even have the same budget. The bad acting is expected but I was not expecting the fact that not a single scene was shot from an actual camera. All of the scenes where from an internal recording system and this was an editing project if anything.
