Underappreciated gem from the Australian indie comedy scene of the early 2000s/2010s
Look, man – This movie was a delight when I saw it at a film festival 10 years ago and I recently rewatched it to see if my memories didn’t hold up but they held up, damn it!

This film is an unsung celebration of mockumentaries. It’s funny because, in terms of gender politics, the movie might’ve been ahead of its time. Maybe it was a time when Will Ferrel and Dane Cook dominated or people were sick of the office and needed more overt comedy. I don’t know. Maybe I’m talking out of my ass.

But, the concept feels electric to me. There’s an underlying subtextual joke that just really constantly tickles me and elevates all of the main character’s antics.

Having this character, this man, unhealthily express his love through stalking this woman – filming her while she sleeps and being completely unaware of just how wrong what he’s doing is – all the while slowly bringing us around to his idea of selfless love, it’s really frickin’ funny and, like, even a little thought-provoking.

He’s sort of a modern day Cyrano De Bergerac and dude, I don’t know what to tell you, it’s just pretty great.

I’m giving this a 10 because it doesn’t deserve a 5 and I don’t think this movie EVER got a fair shake with its old distribution models. I followed it closely after I saw it at the festival, so, I’m a little personally invested and I’m glad that with streaming, it can have more of a fair chance moving forward.
