Some of its horror elements feel half-baked but I loved everything else here! Some great performances and atmosphere. Manages to touch on pretty wide range of racial issues in America and its institutions with a lot of tact. Good stuff!
FULL SPOILER-FREE REVIEW @ https://www.msbreviews.com/movie-reviews/other-films-watched-spoiler-free-review-sundance/#master“Master holds one of the most purposeful, insightful, thought-provoking Black stories of the festival. Mariama Diallo’s directorial debut boasts an intriguing narrative filled with impactful social commentary on racism and white supremacy, “disguising” them with a terrifying, supernatural evil force surrounded by a powerful score and creepy cinematography.
Regina Hall delivers an impressive performance, as does Zoe Renee, but the former truly shines in the lead role. Amber Gray’s character could have been better explored, as well as some secondary themes, which result in a loss of focus around the mid-section.
Nevertheless, the well-written script offers an informative point-of-view, allowing the viewers to feel the discrimination that the main characters suffer without ever making it a forced plot point.
The final scene with the end credits already rolling is a perfect conclusion to demonstrate the cultural and behavioral differences towards and between each race.”

Master
A disappointment. It started out so good until and it kept being good until one point. It became so boring after and so slow that it made me not wanna pay attention to it anymore but I did to see how this film was gonna end up. I was waiting for the whole supernatural thing to be solved but nothing happened, just dialogues. It sure had a deep meaning but Regina Hall can do a lot better than this.
“Master” is neither scary, intense or even just interesting
As “Master” (2022 release; 98 min.) African-American freshman college student Jasmine arrives on the campus of Ancaster, a fictional Ivy League school. Also new on the campus is Gail, the first African-American house master. Meanwhile the new students are introduced to the school’s traditions, including the legend of Margaret Millet, a witch… At this point we are 10 min into the film.Couple of comments: this is the feature length debut of African-American writer-director Mariama Diallo. Here she brings a movie that is supposed to be a “horror’ or “scary” movie, or certainly an intense movie that also happened to be infused with elements of racial inequality. Nothing against any of htat. In fact, when it’s done line in Jordan Peele’s 2017 masterpiece “Get Out”, it becomes a very powerful experience. Alas, “Master” ain’t no “Get Out”. In fact, I’ll admit that I struggled to stay with this film. But the plot (such as it is) is rather thin and all too obvious. As a result, I never became emotionally invested in any of these characters. Regina Hall (as Gail) does the best she can with the weak material that she is given, which isn’t saying much unfortunately.
“Master” premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and just 2 months later it started streaming on Amazon Prime, where I caught it the other night. If you. If you have any interest in a ‘scary’ movie with racial inequality undertones, I’d readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.
