Entertaining “Classic” Witch-Hunt Film…
MARK OF THE DEVIL is my idea of a “classic” film – made before 1975, but still rife with blood and tits (and sometimes bloody tits…). With numerous scenes of torture, a rape, and some “holy” murder – now that’s what I call a classic…

Apparently, Europe was absolutely overflowing with witches in the late 1700’s, and by God, they needed to be stopped. Enter apprentice witch-hunter, Christian (fitting name…), and his assistants. The current witch-finder of the town, Albino, is a scumbag who uses his authority to grope the local hotties, lest he denounce them as witches. Christian is a more upstanding kinda guy, and is none-too-thrilled with Albino’s witch-finding methods. Christian’s mentor and head witch-hunter, Count Cumberland, rolls into town to check up on how things are proceeding, and finds that although Albino’s methods may be shady – there definitely IS a plethora of witchy young ladies (and a few gents…) that are just begging for torture. Meanwhile – Christian begins to fall for a local hottie, which seriously conflicts with his duties as a witch-burning man of God. This especially causes problems when the girl is falsely accused of witchery because she wouldn’t bone Albino, and Count Cumberland is determined to see her hang (or burn, or be beheaded…whatever…) for his own purposes. Between this incident and a violent exchange that he witnesses between Count Cumberland and Albino – Christian’s faith is severely shaken, leaving him to decide if he will turn a blind-eye to the hypocrisy of the church and go on serving as a witch-hunter…or will he turn from his mentor, risking his own life for his new found feelings???

MARK OF THE DEVIL is an entertaining film that has all the characteristics that I love best – very good cinematography and beautiful settings and costumes, good acting, an interesting story-line – and of course – blood and tits. Plenty of torture to be seen here, including: stretching on the rack, lots of whippings, finger crushing, water torture, burning at the stake, branding, beheading, finger chopping, forced-tongue removal, and a pretty novel sitting on a spiked board whilst having the feet smacked with a stick. Fortunately for the more weak-stomached viewers, these scenes are really not that gory – remember, this is 1970 we’re talking’ about. The tortures in the film reminded me of a cross between ILSA: SHE WOLF OF THE SS and some cheesy made-for-TV movie about the Salem witch-hunts that I saw in middle school – so more “hardcore” viewers will more likely get a laugh out of these scenes then be disturbed by them. I was disappointed by the fact that only two girls show their cans in this one, and it’s an absolute TRAVESTY that town hottie Vanessa never unleashes her fun-bags – them puppies were just beggin’ to be freed through the entire film. But even so, MARK OF THE DEVIL is definitely recommended for those that dig older films for their cinematography and “sophistication” – but still have a jones for a little sleaze. 8/10
