This one was a bit of a letdown!
Out of all the “Maniac Cop” series, this one was a letdown. However, out of due respect, I’ve always liked the character no matter what. This time, he tends to a policewoman who was gunned down during a stand-off. And Matt Cordell(Robert D’Zar) is enforced to “protect and serve”. Since none of the other officers would help her, Det. Sean Kenny(Robert Davi) and Cordell are on the same page. Cordell takes on the usual trash crooked cops to be exact. I liked the part where he puts on guy under several exposures of X-rays. Then there’s the scene where Kenny tells Cordell that she’s been cleared of all wrongdoing. Somehow, underneath his hulking and ravaged exterior belies a interior that’s anything but supernatural, it’s human. Both went with the explosion, and covered in white. To me, it goes to show that love never dies, especially when Cordell touches the dead woman’s hand from the sheets. I mean good grief, let her be. This version got a little sappy, yet will he continue the fight against crime, or will he settle down? This one got me baffled! 2 out of 5 stars!
Basically more of the same.
Matt Cordell aka Maniac Cop is brought back from the dead by some voodoo priest and he tries to help out a female police officer that was gunned down and now on life support. She is wrongly accused of excessive force during an armed robbery and killing an innocent hostage. And the heavy weights want to pull her plug to please those people crowing for her life, but Cordell is out there to protect the reputation of this officer.A so-so sequel, not awful, but neither good. What brings it down is that there is so many unexplained questions and too many things going on throughout the convoluted plot, which it turns out to be a mindless and rather pointless film. I haven’t seen the original, but I’ve seen the second film, which is definitely the better of the sequels. One of the few recommendation’s is that Robert Davi returns as Det. Sean McKinney and also Robert Z’Dar is back as the horribly disfigured cop from the grave Matt Cordell. The social commentary is basically on the greedy politicians, dodgy paparazzi and a mostly corrupt police department. Maybe it was too forced, for my liking, but the subject matter just felt rather tiring as we’ve seen it before in the other films. But hey, it had some flashes of inventiveness and some mild suspense along the way. It sticks with the usual bloody deaths, but they’re executed in a rather mundane fashion. Also it’s not all that predictable, which is kinda refreshing. The disappointing thing is that it feels like the maniac cop is kept in the background through most of the feature. This time he comes across as more of shadow figure in the story.Cohen gives us some nice added dark humour, which make up on the shortcomings of the screenplay. Director Lustig sets up some well-designed sequences, but sadly most of it is reasonably standard stuff without the punch.
Writer Larry Cohen and director Williams Lustig come up with an okay sequel, but for most of the running time it was bland and nothing out of the ordinary. Only for the die-hard fans of the first two films, but they also might be disappointed in what they see?
