A wonderful, funny and moving picture.
The directors could have gone many different directions with this film. They obviously built an incredible level of access and intimacy with their subjects and this shows in every shot, the characters (who, as is my experience in Japan, show almost no shame about human sexuality) are comfortable talking frankly in a way that western subjects would never be. But they could have made a titillating, mocking or farcical film, they could have played it for laughs or for shock but instead they treated their subjects with compassion and tenderness and have created a truly wonderful movie. A moving picture of human sexuality. It’s fun, it’s wise and it’s memorable. As one of the characters says, i think it’s Ruki, ‘none of us are normal,’ how true.
