Worse than Soul Plane. 0 stakes legal heist with a bunch of dumb bullshit.

Less homophobia than Soul Plane so in that sense Tyler’s growing. Still it manages to suck balls.

Almost all the aviation stuff was bullshit.
I was going to put a list together of things that were wrong, but the list would be way too long. They had 10 tons of gold in a plane with 150 passengers? I think that’s too much weight. They had panels “stuck” to their plane to make it stealthy? I think not. What did they use to attach them? What kind of material? One guy gets sucked out of the plane, with several others in the same compartment. They would be gone, too. And I don’t think their airplane was real in any way. And, much, much, more.
But the story was interesting and the acting was pretty good. I would have given it a thumbs down, but the good guys won, so I couldn’t do that.

Another lame filler job by Netflix
As usual, an expensive cast can’t help with a poor script of less than B-grade quality. Kevin Hart is mis-cast and has zero charisma as the supposed leader of an elite team of art thieves. A few other names show up but have little to do.

Action is kind of feeble, except for the initial Venice boat chase which is just OK. The actual plot, such as it is, makes very little sense, and seems essentially random.

Even my wife, who is very tolerant for basic fun movies, was openly mocking the ridiculous and predictable script by the end.

Yes, it’s another half-hearted by the numbers effort by Netflix. No, it’s really not worth your time. I regretted watching it.

Made as a tax write-off?!!
I knew exactly what to expect before I started watching. I put my brain in a drawer, suspended reality and began. Ten minutes in and I resorted to contemplating what I have done wrong in my life to warrant this film being made, let alone being made available to watch. It looks pretty. That’s it. Awful acting. Cliched speech. Rubbish CGI. I don’t pay for Netflix. My partner does. I cancelled my subscription last year because they only make dog-do shows and films. And this is the top of the heap. I’m a fan of apocalyptic films – the ones where the world ends. I longed for a meteor to smash into the planet to end my misery. I’d rather watch my nan in the shower than watch 5 mins of this film.

The True Heist Was Stealing My Time
There is nothing like sitting in front of a big screen TV, with popcorn and drink to watch a good old heist movie. Sorry, folks. This ain’t it.

A crack team of professional criminals, each with their unique set of skills, plan to execute a high stakes, high danger, high reward job, though I found it difficult to care whether or not the team pulled it off.

The characters were two-dimensional, and lacked any endearing qualities, so I wasn’t invested in them in whether or not they even succeeded. The banter between them was a futile attempt to make them seem likable to an audience, but lacked any true qualities to empathize with. After watching the movie, there is not one character name I can recall.

The characters were never really given a true chance to shine, and the underutilization of highly respected actors such as Vincent Donofrio and Jean Reno was the true crime in this movie. If the Kevin Hart character’s exposition of his intelligence was scaled back somewhat, then it may have allowed two screen legends like Donofrio and Reno some room to move and give this film some substance.

LIFT was a reworked copy of another F. Gary Gray movie from 2003. Hints: Both have a boat chase through the canals in Venice. Both involve near impenetrable safes. Both safes contained bars of gold. Both involve a safe switch. Both have the lead female character punching an unlikable person in the face at the end.

The CGI was overdone and completely unconvincing. Some practical effects would not only have been cheaper, but would have sold the action with far more realism.

I am starved for a great action flick, or even just a good, memorable movie. This wasn’t one of them. I wonder how long I’ll be going hungry for quality entertainment in 2024?
