Synopsis

Watch: Lawman 1971 123movies, Full Movie Online – While passing through the town of Bannock, a bunch of drunken, trail-weary cattlemen go overboard with their celebrating and accidentally kill an old man with a stray shot. They return home to Sabbath unaware of his death. Bannock lawman Jered Maddox later arrives there to arrest everyone involved on a charge of murder. Sabbath is run by land baron Vince Bronson, a benevolent despot, who, upon hearing of the death, offers restitution for the incident. Maddox, however, will not compromise even though small ranchers like Vern Adams are not in a position to desert their responsibilities for a long and protracted trial. Sabbath’s marshal, Cotton Ryan, is an aging lawman whose tough reputation rests on a single incident that occurred years before. Ryan admits to being only a shadow of what he once was and incapable of stopping Maddox. Maddox confides to Ryan that Bannock’s judicial system is weak and corrupt, and while he’s doubtful that anyone he brings back will suffer more than the price of a bribe, he will not be deterred from the unrelenting pursuit of his duty. Initially Bronson appears willing to make concessions, but when his oldest friend Harvey Stenbaugh is killed after deliberately picking a fight with Maddox, Bronson digs in his heels with the rest of the town to resist the relentless lawman..

***“Do you know what a lawman is? He’s a killer of men”***

A grim marshal (Burt Lancaster) enters the town of Sabbath to apprehend the cattlemen guilty of accidently killing a man during a rowdy celebration while passing through his town. But the lawman finds resistance from everyone because the perpetrators work for the cattle baron (Lee J. Cobb) who “owns” the town and its sheriff (Robert Ryan). Sheree North plays his old flame while Robert Duvall, Robert Jordan, Albert Salmi and Ralph Waite are on hand as the cattlemen.

“Lawman” (1971) explores the nature of law & justice in the context of the Old West and compels the viewer to choose sides. The days of the Wild West are over and civilization has arrived, which means there are legal consequences to unruly behavior that results in unintentional death. The townsfolk want the matter swept under the rug and everyone simply paid off by the rich baron. However, lucre isn’t what interests Maddox (Lancaster), but rather fulfilling his responsibility and ultimately justice.

The plot was lifted from “Man with the Gun” (1955) and is also similar to “Last Train from Gun Hill” (1959), but with the tone of contemporary Westerns like “Firecreek” (1968) and “Valdez is Coming” (1971).

While this is mostly a town-bound Western, it wisely features several scenes in the spectacular surrounding Southwest wilderness, including a nice waterfall sequence. This plus the superlative cast and heavy theme make “Lawman” an obscure standout. By the way, I’m wholly on the side of Maddox for the simple reasoning: Those who play and wreak havoc have to pay regardless of the social status of their employer.

The movie runs 1 hour, 39 minutes, and was shot in Durango, Mexico, and points nearby (Sierra de Organos, Sombrerete, Zacatecas; and three areas of Sonora).

GRADE: A-

I’m a lawman. Do you know what a lawman is, Crowe? He’s a killer of men.

Lawman is directed by Michael Winner and written by Gerry Wilson. It stars Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee J. Cobb, Robert Duvall, Sheree North and Richard Jordan. Music is by Jerry Fielding and cinematography by Robert Paynter.

The Lawman of the title is Jared Maddox (Lancaster), who arrives in the town of Sabbath to serve warrants on the group of rowdies responsible for the death of an old man. His cold hearted approach to his work, however, doesn’t endear him to the townsfolk.

A man gets caught in his own doing. Can’t change what you are, and if you try, something always calls you back.

Traditional Western that deals in the conflict between law and justice, Lawman, like the leading man, broods significantly. The overriding theme of if Maddox’s enforcement of the law justify’s the means, is tailor made for Winner’s affinity for all things vengeance flavoured. Violence is not in short supply, the director gleefully keeping things gory, and the characterisations of the principal players are smartly complex. The excellent cast turn in equally great performances, the Durango locales are beautifully utilised by Winner and Paynter, and the production design is grade “A” quality.

It’s an anti-backlash movie of some substance, where spicy and thoughtful dialogue comes forth from the mouths of deftly shaded characters. Highly recommended to Adult Western fans. 8/10

Spoiler – That Ending
Don’t read this if you haven’t seen the movie! Robert Ryan is always great. Burt Lancaster was too. For being such an athletic actor, Burt is not afraid to show some thickening around the middle here. But I’m not going to mess around – what about that ending? And last chance – see the movie first before reading further. I watched it alone on Amazon Prime. This is my substitute for a discussion.

Why’d he do it? Why’d he shoot the poor guy in the back? Was he jealous? He asked Duvall if there was good land still available around there. He talked to Ryan about retiring. Did he still think he could get the old sweety and settle down? But then realized it would never work? Was he so disgusted with all the killing, he just wanted to shoot the guy like the running rabbit he was? He seemed to have a high moral code right up until he took that shot. Something snapped in him? Did he not want Ms North to think upon him kindly? “I can’t have her, but I don’t want her to miss me. Remember me as a real SOB.” Couldn’t he have shot him in the leg? (Not realistically, but cinematically since pistols are not very accurate at long distances.) Or did they just want to give the audience something to talk about leaving the theatre? Unexpectedly thought provoking either way.
