FULL SPOILER-FREE REVIEW @ https://www.msbreviews.com/movie-reviews/jung-e-review“JUNG_E is not what viewers expect.
A war flick without the war, Yeon Sang-ho places the post-apocalyptic action in the background and instead focuses on a compelling study of what it means to be human with a touching mother-daughter relationship at its core.
Despite some frustratingly over-the-top performances and one intolerably irritating character, the filmmaker’s message is well-intended, clear, and meaningful.
Unnecessary exposition and inconsistent visual effects don’t help elevate the generic premise, but the impressive stunt work, epic score, and some genuinely captivating combat sequences make it an overall satisfying viewing.”
Rating: B-
Whilst coming in what appears to be an exciting sci-fi wrapper, what’s inside, is a complete let down.Jung-E is in simple terms a woke bore fest. The action, when it arrives after many many minutes of thoroughly tedious female empowerment and navel gazing, is too brief and for this viewer, utterly unexciting.
in summary, don’t let the glitzy box fool you, there’s little of any consequence inside.
JUNG_E (2023)
Yeon Sang-ho is director and writer in this futuristic tale about a legendary mercenary Captain Yun Jung-yi (Kim Hyun-joo) who leads the revolt with Allied Forces against the Adrian Republic, after attacking Earth and man-made shelters in outerspace, in the not-too-distance future.During her final mission, Captain Yun Jung-yi is left in a comatose state while her family is approached by the research institute Kronoid, with a proposition to clone her brain in order to develop an AI mercenary code-named JUNG_E, who will finally lead the Allied Forces to victory. Kang Soo-yeon in her final film appearance, may she rest in peace. Delivers an emotional performance as the daughter of war-hero, Yun Seo-hyun, who is the team leader of the research project and works diligently towards upholding her mother’s legacy. I believe that keeping the honor of our ancestors was the overall message of the film, but it did become somewhat muddled in an otherwise decent premise. The storyline feels incomplete or it could have been a pilot for a television-series. The saving grace for the film was the action sequences with Kim Hyun-joo which were exceptional and well-choreographed. Including the opening sequence. The team behind the visual effects completely outdid themselves as this is one of the most visually remarkable films that I have ever seen from a Korean release. I can see them receiving numerous accolades for the outstanding detail on the landscapes of an Earth that has become desolate and inhabitable through climate-change. However, the runtime was too short for a concept this ambitious. The mother-daughter relationship was the primary focus, but I also wanted the narrative to go into further detail about the fate of this futuristic society. The world-building and the characterization should have been more fleshed out as it merely felt cold and empty. The viewer is left creatively malnourished during the closing act.

10 out of 10 just for the action sequences.
This was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t really expect much of it after watching the trailer, but the actual movie has so much more than the trailer which literally shows first few minutes of the beginning of the movie. I assume they didn’t want to show much in the trailer since the movie has simple plot and shorter running time. As the subject states, the best thing about this movie is those excellent action sequences. It doesn’t show a lot but I didn’t feel short either. The fight scenes are very well choreographed with seamless CGI. This is coming from a person who’s been watching cyberpunk movies and anime since the blade runner. I could notice that the director didn’t shy away from adding some homage moments for the movie, Ghost in the Shell. It’s not a perfect movie by any means. There are some sappy and cheesy moments which seem to be cliche in korean movies. The biggest downside for me was the movie was too short. They designed awesome androids and robots, but they somehow don’t give a longer screen time for them. I think that’s a crime. Hopefully there’s a sequel without the korean movie cliche.
