Watch: House of Usher 1960 123movies, Full Movie Online – Philip Winthrop calls upon his fiancée, Madeline Usher, at her family home. His presence is unwelcome, especially to Madeline’s brother, Roderick. Roderick explains that the Ushers are cursed, suffering from hereditary physical defects. By Madeline marrying Winthrop this would only likely continue the affliction. It soon becomes clear that something sinister is afoot: not only due to Roderick’s determination to prevent Madeline from leaving but also due to the evil that seems to lurk in the house itself..
Plot: After a long journey, Philip arrives at the Usher mansion seeking his loved one, Madeline. Upon arriving, however, he discovers that Madeline and her brother Roderick Usher have been afflicted with a mysterious malady: Roderick’s senses have become painfully acute, while Madeline has become catatonic. That evening, Roderick tells his guest of an old Usher family curse: any time there has been more than one Usher child, all of the siblings have gone insane and died horrible deaths. As the days wear on, the effects of the curse reach their terrifying climax.

Fissures of concrete and of the mind…Phillip Winthrop has been searching for his missing fiancée, Madeline Usher. Tracking her down to the Usher family castle, he finds that Madeline is held strangely under the spell of her brother Roderick. The house itself also seems to be laden heavy with a mystical sense of dread and impending death. Filmed in glorious CinemaScope with vivid colour photography from Floyd Crosby, based on a story from dark master writer Edgar Allen Poe, boasting Vincent Price in the lead role, and directed by Roger Corman with a budget worthy of his vision, House Of Usher (The Fall Of) is a highly eerie Gothic piece of work.
Delightfully weird, the film covers a myriad of things to unease the watching public, curses, incest, burial alive, paranoia and sadistic intentions all sit together with Corman and Richard Matheson’s Gothic leanings. In fact a huge amount of credit for the pic’s subsequent success at the box office must go to Matheson, who took Poe’s skeleton story and cloaked it with the previous mentioned strands to fully flesh out the piece.
On the surface the picture probably shouldn’t have worked, basically it’s just four characters moping around talking grimly and waiting for the inevitable, but it’s the house itself that is the story’s major player. Corman utilising his widescreen trait to make the house disjointed and creepy in every frame, with the use of sounds also helping to keep the pervading sense of doom a very real threat – the house does in fact become the monster of the piece.
All is not well in the House Of Usher, I hope you feel it as well. Amen. 8/10

“House of Usher” (1960) was the first of AIP’s gothic horror flicks of the 60s inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, eight of which were done by Roger Corman, but others were filmed by different directors, like “The Conqueror Worm” (1968), aka “Witchfinder General,” and “The Oblong Box” (1969). Others were Poe-ish in ambiance, yet had nothing to do with the works of Poe, like Corman & Coppola’s “The Terror” (1963).
Speaking of which, most of these flicks didn’t follow Poe’s stories/poems very closely despite his name being linked to them. “The Oblong Box,” for instance, features a totally different story. Meanwhile the title of “The Conqueror Worm” was tacked on to “Witchfinder General” in America, along with a quote from Poe’s poem, merely to sell tickets.
This one is closer to Poe’s actual story, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” although scriptwriter Richard Matheson wisely throws in some romance involving the protagonist and Roderick’s sister.
While it was successful at the box office and kicked off the series, I found it (melo)dramatically tedious and one-dimensional despite the colorful gothic atmosphere. I suggest seeing “The Pit and the Pendulum” (1961), “The Terror,” “The Conqueror Worm,” “The Masque of the Red Death” (1964), “The Raven” (1963) and “Tomb of Ligeia” (1964) first. If you want more, check this one out too.
AIP was basically the American version of Hammer in England, so devotees of Hammer horror should appreciate it.
The movie runs 1 hour, 19 minutes, and was shot at Raleigh Studios, Hollywood, with the fire-charred land done in Hollywood Hills.

Corman makes Poe proud
The first of Roger Corman’s adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe stories stars Vincent Price as the head of the Usher house; Roderick Usher. Roderick Usher believes that there is an evil curse on his family, a curse that is also the reason for his and his sister’s affliction. Because of this curse of evil, he doesn’t want the Usher family line to continue and so he has decided to do all in his power to stop it. However, his sister, Madeline’s fiancé has come to the Usher house to take her back with him, but Roderick knows that this will mean that the Usher family line will continue and he cannot allow the evil to spread across the world….Roger Corman is often seen as a ‘cheap’ director because of the vast amount of films that he has made. Although this is certainly somewhat true as a few of them aren’t particularly good; if you take a look at his Poe films, this couldn’t be further from then truth. Here, Corman creates a constantly morbid and foreboding atmosphere; not with shocks or other cheap methods, but by simple things such as smoke, an old house and it’s creepy inhabitants that utter the most malevolent of lines, some of which are truly bone chilling. Of course, this movie benefits implicitly from the presence of a man that is maybe horror’s purest actor; Vincent Price. Price was born to play roles like Roderick Usher, and anyone that sees this film wont find it hard to see why. Vincent Price delivers his lines with just the right tone in order to make him obviously evil, but yet pathetic at the same time; just how the character should be played. When it comes to the ‘greatest actor of all time’ awards, Vincent Price never gets mentioned, but this is a great injustice; as anyone who has seen a number of films will know.
Corman also succeeds in creating a constant sense of intrigue, and the audience is left hanging on every moment, as we can’t wait to see what happens next. Of course, Edgar Allen Poe can take much of the credit for this as the great man did write the story that it was based on, but Corman comes off looking good as well as it is his direction that makes the story so consistently thrilling. The movie also benefits from some very lavish sets, which gives the movie it’s upper class dinosaur feel. The house itself is a great piece of horror imagery; it is responsible for most of the atmosphere that is present in the movie.
