Holy crap, a film actually worse than the last one
Holy crap, a film actually worse than the last one! Seriously, this film goes downhill; really, really, really downhill. For several reasons: bad-story, bad-SFX, bad monsters, some seriously wacky fight moves and that still doesn’t even sum up the half of it. The story was a rewritten, with a few minor changes. Same monster tag team and invading aliens, although these ones are from earth. Robert Dunham was pretty cool in it, but the cast is worth mentioning beyond that. Even though it hardly need be said, seriously low-budget. Through the miracle of stock footage, we see footage from “Ghidorah: The 3-Headed Monster”, “War of the Gargantuans”, “Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster”, “Destroy All Monsters” and the film Toho released only a year before, “Godzilla vs. Gigan”. They couldn’t even afford a single building! To the monsters….The new Godzilla suit isn’t the worst, but he is now a friend to children for sure, with balloon-looking spines. Gigan returns, looking as cool as he did last time, although he spends most of the movie getting his ass severely kicked. Jet Jaguar, for starters, God, the name. Secondly, any plain fool can tell he’s an Ultra-Man rip off. Thirdly, prepare yourself, the damned robot grows from 6’2 to 164’5 in a flash, which is never explained, not they could because I’m pretty sure metal can’t grow. Then comes Megalon, our star and title villain. The one who gets the stock footage battle with the maser tanks and JSDF, and the stock footage attack on Tokyo and the air force (I always wondered as a kid: ‘why I can see Gigan’s claw hitting a few of the jets?’). He’s a humanoid beetle with drill arms, only four limbs and a hell of an odd flier. Worst G-villain ever in my humble opinion. The fights are so ridiculous that it makes them fun to watch, not counting the stock footage obviously. The score isn’t bad and keeps the mood of the fight scenes and definitely turning up the cheese factor. Jun Fukuda’s worst film ever and an eye sore in G-history. Oddly, I believe this is the first ever Godzilla movie I ever saw, when I was around five. For that, I can ridicule it all I want, but I still find watching it entertaining as it taps into those simpler days of childhood.
