Finally … It’s on DVD
As a fan of Argento’s early films, I have been waiting for this to be released on DVD for years. “4 Flies” is the the only film from his golden era that I had not seen. Although there have been other ways to see this film, I have been stubbornly waiting for a DVD release. It was worth the wait and I was very entertained. Some of the scientific/medical content of the crime investigation is silly. Besides that, I have very few complaints. It kept me guessing about the identity of the killer.
On a side note, I read a review that complained the movies is homophobic. That’s not true. I think the gay character is presented as admirably honest and ultimately heroic. Considering this film was made in 1970, it was daring in that respect.
I have been continually disappointed by most of Argento’s films after”Phenomen”so it was nice to travel back in time to when he was able to make a film like this
Argento the Comedian?
Master Argento’s most difficult film to track down, but highly worth the search! “Four Flies on Grey Velvet” is perhaps not his strongest film, but what do you expect with a repertoire like Argento’s? They can’t all be genuine masterpieces, but this relatively early effort (his third film and also the closure of his animal-trilogy) is still far above average, with an original and highly convoluted plot, vivid dialogs, suspense, effectively misleading red herrings and extremely imaginative camera-work. Roberto is a young handsome rock drummer playing in a band alongside his friends. For the last week he has a guy with a fancy suit and dark sunglasses stalking him for no apparent reason. When Roberto accidentally kills the guy during the inevitable confrontation, it suddenly becomes clear that someone entirely different intends to frame him as the accidental murder is even captured on film. From then on, a guy wearing a crazed Mr. Potato Head resembling mask threatens and blackmails Roberto as well as his girlfriend. Further murders and mayhem soon ensue as well, when more people become involved in the continuously thickening plot. Perhaps the strangest aspect about “Four Flies on Grey Velvet” is the surprisingly high amount of comedy factors. Argento isn’t exactly known for his sense of humor, but this film features a lot of it, like a sub plot about a homosexual private detective, a simple-minded mailman who keeps on delivering wrong parcels and the hilarious “Queer Frankenstein” story narrated by one of the insignificant supportive characters. The humor isn’t too inappropriately or misfit, just something you don’t immediately expect to see in the works of Italy’s most prominent horror director. Also “Four Flies ” isn’t nearly as grim and sadistic as some as Argento’s other stuff (or other contemporary Gialli by different directors, for that matter). The film does feature, however, an extremely nasty throat-slitting and an exhilarating finale. It’s just my opinion, of course, but instead of some of the odd running gags and stereotypes I wanted to see some extra murders.
