Watch: Dirty Dancing 1987 123movies, Full Movie Online – In 1963, Frances “Baby” Houseman, a sweet daddy’s girl, goes with her family to a resort in upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains. Baby has grown up in privileged surroundings and all expect her to go on to college, join the Peace Corps and save the world before marrying a doctor, just like her father. Unexpectedly, Baby becomes infatuated with the camp’s dance instructor, Johnny Castle, a man whose background is vastly different from her own. Baby lies to her father to get money to pay for an illegal abortion for Johnny’s dance partner. She then fills in as Johnny’s dance partner and it is as he is teaching her the dance routine that they fall in love. It all comes apart when Johnny’s friend falls seriously ill after her abortion and Baby gets her father, who saves the girl’s life. He then learns what Baby has been up to, who with and worse, that he funded the illegal abortion. He bans his daughter from any further association with “those people”. In the first deliberately willful action of her life, Baby later sneaks out to see Johnny, ostensibly to apologize for her father’s rudeness, and ends up consummating her relationship with Johnny. A jealous fellow vacationer sees Baby sneaking out of Johnny’s bungalow the next morning, and in an act of retribution, tells management that he is responsible for a theft the evening before, knowing he would not furnish his real whereabouts..

A pretty simplistic film with a plot that’s more of an excuse to show dance scenes and an extremely surface level handling of the issues of gender and class that it raises, but it’s pretty cute and also I’m bisexual so I like it anyway.

Entertaining hit with lush Appalachian locations, but the writing doesn’t respect the intelligence of the viewer

RELEASED IN 1987 and directed by Emile Ardolino, “Dirty Dancing” stars Patrick Swayze as Johnny Castle, a working-class dance instructor at a mountain resort in the Catskills in 1963. Jennifer Grey costars as “Baby,” the 17-year-old daughter of an affluent Jewish doctor vacationing at the resort. She takes the place of Johnny’s dance partner after his partner gets pregnant, albeit not by Johnny. Baby naturally develops a crush.

This was the hit romantic drama of 1987, but it actually didn’t make as much at the domestic box office compared to the other two dance flicks of the 80s: “Flashdance” (1983) made $95 million and “Footloose” (1984) $80 million while “Dirty Dancing” brought it $64 million. The two main cast members are a highlight. Swayze was in his prime and Jennifer Grey cute & nimble, like a fawn. In reality Grey was 26 years-old during filming, although she passes for late teens pretty well. Swayze, however, was 34 and looked it, albeit trim and fit.

The lush Appalachian locations are outstanding and the story keeps your attention but you’ll roll your eyes at the idiotic misunderstanding where Baby’s father assumes Johnny’s the one who got his partner pregnant and, for some strange reason, no one sets him straight. Not to mention, the characters always say the wrong thing at the wrong time, which perpetuates the misunderstanding. Also, the sexual union of Johnny & Baby is both premature and unbelievable in light of the time period, Baby’s age (17 years-old) and her upbringing. Frankie Avalon was once asked about his early 60’s “Beach” movies if the male-female relationships were as “squeaky clean” as portrayed and he answered (paraphrasing): “As a teen back then ‘going all the way’ wasn’t even considered an option.” The obvious exception would be disreputable kids from the “other side of the tracks.”

Moreover, the fact that Johnny is having sex with the doctor’s daughter, a minor at that, can’t win any points in his favor. Hence, even without the misunderstanding there’s little reason for the father to warm up to Johnny. So why does the doctor show respect for Johnny at the end, a dude who’s fornicating with his under-aged daughter and is clearly much older than her as well, although it could be argued that he’s naïve and doesn’t necessarily know they’re having sex already. Flaws like these smack of lazy writing and are offensive to anyone with an ounce of intelligence.

If you can look past these problems, however, the film is entertaining. The dance sequences shown in the staff area are akin to vertical sex with clothes on. I guess that’s why it’s called “Dirty Dancing,” huh? Yet this is another flaw of the movie: these scenes are so amped-up and choreographed they shout to the viewer via megaphone: “This is A MOVIE; it’s NOT REAL.” Nonetheless, Grey’s a cutie, Swayze’s The Man and the beautiful Appalachian locations are a highlight, filmed at Mountain Lake Resort, Pembroke, Virginia, and Lake Lure, NC.

“I don’t believe you Baby”!
This timeless summer love story is a classic and will never be dated. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen Dirty Dancing. This is one movie that I could probably watch every few weeks and still love.

There is something timeless about this movie. I have loved other “blockbuster love story movies” like Pretty Woman and when Harry met Sally. I think their up there but there is something about Dirty Dancing that just makes it absolutely perfect. The characters, the chemistry between Swaze and Grey, the movie’s direction, the INCREDIBLE dancing, the warm summery atmosphere, everything about dirty dancing is absolutely perfect. It is an instant classic and I’ve never really seen a movie like it either before or since.

I don’t think there is one particular element that makes this movie so loved but many things, a lot of which are mentioned by numerous reviewers. Dirty Dancing has a nostalgic, languid, summery mood, realistic characters, a relateable honest message coupled with incredible music and dancing, and the one of the best dance sequences cinema has ever given us.

This movie is always on TV and I will continue to watch it as long as they show it. But I WILL mention I have no interest in seeing “Havanna Nights”, this one they should have left alone.

Truly excellent with jaw-dropping dance routines.
Dirty Dancing is an excellent movie. No, it isn’t perfect, but it is solid entertainment for those into dancing. There are two flaws with the film. The script is not the best script in the world, to be honest, there are some clichés. Also, as much as Cynthia Rhodes puts a lot of energy into the dance routines, her acting isn’t as good unfortunately.

However, putting those minor discrepancies aside, the highlights are the jaw-dropping if rather erotic dance routines and the ever-popular soundtrack. The famous lift in the best dance of the film is very hard to do properly, and as far as I’m aware, it was very well-done. The soundtrack isn’t like Charlie’s Angels or anything similar to that, where the songs get too much. If anything, they capture the feel-good nature of the film perfectly.

Now for the performances. I have already mentioned Cynthia Rhodes, but I thought that Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey gave the roles of their careers in Dirty Dancing. Their partnership was like Torvill and Dean on ice, unquestionably brilliant. Jerry Orbach gives a wonderful performance also as the earnest Jake Housemann.

In conclusion, with a couple of minor flaws, Dirty Dancing is a treat, for those into dancing.8/10. Bethany Cox
