Julie Christie is on top form as the determined “Diana”. She is an attractive aspiring model and nothing is going to stop her reaching her goals – fame and fortune! She is married and initially in love with “Tony” (TR Bowen) but a chance interview with “Gold” (Dirk Bogarde) offers her new opportunities and horizons and soon they are adulterers together! Not for long though, he introduces her her to “Brand” (Laurence Harvey) and, well you get the drift. Finally, she ends up in a bit of a shell marriage to the Prince Cesare (José Luis de Vilallonga) and it is at this point she gives the interview that provides us with this retrospective of her life that is largely told via flashback. John Schlesinger works his cast really well here and together with a cleverly constructed screenplay from Frederic Raphael; some creative photography from Ken Higgins and some stylish fashions courtesy of Julie Harris offers us a potent insight into the vanity and shallowness of industries where people are commodities, and those who use and abuse it (on both sides) are only ever one step away from depression and failure. It is too long, and the story can be a little sluggish at times, but Christie is an excellent choice for “Diana” and she throws her heart and soul into her characterisation. It’s still apposite almost sixty years later – and sends a salutary message to anyone who might think there are any easy wins in this hard-as-nails business that rarely values loyalty or longevity.

A sometimes interesting character study of a young actress / model and her downward spiral in 1960s London. Good performances all around, but no likeable characters at all. Possibly good fare for a rainy Saturday afternoon.

London in the ’60s in all its glory
Julie Christie is “Darling” in this 1965 film directed by John Schlesinger, and also starring Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Harvey. Schlesinger does a beautiful job of showing us ’60s London as it was, and yet he managed to make a film that is just as timely now.

Julie Christie is model Diana Scott, a gorgeous, ambitious young woman who moves from man to man without attachment and with the intention of helping her career. She dumps her first husband and breaks up the marriage of a British journalist (Bogarde) and then moves on to a pleasure-seeking advertising executive (Harvey), and finally, marries an Italian prince. It’s one of those lives that sounds great – she has beauty, money, men, glamour, travels in the circles of the beautiful people. But she has no emotional attachments, no love, and nothing that she has feels right or is anything she wants. All the external trappings of celebrity, but it’s a shell.

A really terrific movie, and I have to agree with the posters whose comments I read that Julie Christie is perfection in every way. Bogarde and Harvey give her excellent support. As an aside, Christie’s wardrobe is stunning.

None of the characters are very likable, except perhaps Bogarde, who in spite of leaving his wife and family does truly love Diana.

Despite the cold realities of Darling, we’re even more obsessed with celebrity today, which makes the film even more interesting. But when you look at a photo, see someone in a magazine or on the screen, you’re only dealing with a persona, not the flesh and blood individual. It’s a fantasy. Darling shows the audience what’s behind the fantasy – and it’s not very pretty.

well acted but uninvolving
This movie has been well-received by critics and Julie Christie won the Oscar for Best Actress. Despite this fine pedigree, I was amazingly unimpressed by the film. Yes, I will agree that this is a good film TECHNICALLY–there’s some good acting and direction. However, I just found myself caring little for Christie’s character. She was incredibly shallow and conniving, though quite pretty, and she slept her way to success. This makes for a moderately interesting film at best. Many will no doubt enjoy this movie, but I have a problem watching a movie when I really don’t care for ANYONE. This is definitely my prejudice–I admit it. If you can get past this, you’ll probably like Darling. If, however, you need to feel a sense of connection to at least some of the characters, I suggest you avoid the movie.
