Happiness, struggles, injustices and finding reconciliation
Fantastic storytelling about art, beliefs, friendships, family, purpose and how they work together and against you throughout a lifetime. Will make you smile, cry and inspire. Loved it!
Fascinating Art History
This documentary is about a movement I wasn’t aware of, not being American. The documentary eases you into the work and ideas of the movement and keeps you focused on the men of making the art as well as the art itself. It presents beautiful images, along with a wonderful sense of 1960s and 1970s Utah. Southey was a fascinating man, who created some truly beautiful art, and I am delighted to have such a clear insight into him and his art. However, the other members and their wives are not ignored and are fully a part of Trevor’s story, as they should be. The film is very evenhanded, giving a voice to Trevor’s wife who was left behind as he moved on with his life, and who then helped ensure his twilight days were happy. On the level of faith, again the film is very balanced. It shows the things that pushed Trevor from the Church, but also shows how he became reconciled to the spirit of the Church, if not the law of the Church. The personal elements from the filmaker Nathan Florence are really important because they create the momentum and spine of the story. The scenes between Florence and Southey are incredibly touching as Nathan helps Trevor to complete his last painting. I found the film very moving and very spiritual, and came away entirely uplifted.
