Ice vs Fire
I remember this Winbledon finals like it was last month, what a great mach it was between two iconic tennis players, maybe two of the most unforgettable sportsmen ever. Two men, two opposite personalities, one great match, one thrilling drama well directed by Janus Metz and masterfully played by Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf as the opponents, still I have to mention Stellan Skarsgård, the man simply doen’t know how to act bad in a movie. After you watch this one you’ll go and search for the real game on Youtube, you wont regret it for sure. 8 out of 10
Excellent, a definite contender for finest sports movie of the 2010s
Everybody with a bit of an interest in (the history of) tennis will know immediately what this 105-minute film is about, namely the rivalry between two of the finest players of the white sport from their respective eras, so the focus is of course on the overlapping of both players’ greatness that resulted in an epic Wimbledon final in 1980. On a side-note, 2017 seems to be a good year for tennis films as we also get Emma Stone vs. Steve Carrell in “Battle of the Sexes”, but we shall talk about that one on another occasion. This one we have here has major Scandinavian influence, in terms of the people who made this, the people acting in it and of course also the subject of Björn Borg. So make sure you have subtitles for the Swedish parts unless you speak the language. And my hope for you is that you have better subtitles than the ones I saw during my watch. Stuff like “backhand” was translated as “Hinterhand” and also aside from tennis vocabulary, there were really many parts that got translated not just freely, but said something completely different than the film did. Definitely my biggest criticism and I hope the company/person in charge of the subtitles never gets to translate another movie. Back to the positive: The film has many more strengths other than being based on actually existing people. I also believe that they did a really good job in including fictitious dramatization and elements as the film never seemed dramatic for the sake of it. It’s the tale of two great champions who couldn’t be any more different really, but are still somewhat the same. Borg was very similar to the grown-up McEnroe when he was a child in terms of his temper. And there is that mention that both have a volcano in them, but that only McEnroe’s keeps erupting constantly. There were other really interesting segments like when we see them drink during their big match or when we compare how they interact with family and friends. And the childhood parts of course. I did not know Gudnason before seeing this film, but I think he was great for the part and gave a good performance. I did know LaBeouf of course and he is an interesting choice for sure as he is an infant terrible too in his field of profession just like McEnroe and what can you say? He nailed the part. He’s been making some pretty good decisions recently in which films he would appear and which characters he would play, given good performances and I hope it stays that away. The talent is undeniable. Skarsgård playing one of the biggest supporting characters is a welcome addition as always too.
I certainly had the impression that the people who made this movie know a lot about professional tennis. As a consequence we have a film that does look very authentic. Sure there is that comedic approach starring the guy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but it’s not defining on the sports genre of course, it’s all about the over-the-topness and comedy and it’s a very entertaining (short) film too, but don’t get me started on Wimbledon (the Dunst/Bettany film) of course. This one here is indeed maybe the best tennis film ever made. It’s maybe this one or Rush for best sports film of the decade now. As for the competence I just mentioned, one example would be the reference about how Borg will stop playing when he loses and the evidence was his early retirement years before his 30th anniversary. If you see what Federer is doing right now, you could wonder what would have been had Borg played a little longer or also really competed in Australia and the US. And the fact that Borg finally won the title still made it a happy ending for John somehow with how the audience accepts (not loves) him, including his family members, and of course with how McEnroe became number 1 the year after and also won Wimbledon the next year. But his QF opponent was right. Today he is remembered for his outbursts, not for his triumphs in contrast to Borg.
Overall, I thought this was an excellent film, executed with great competence and precision from start to finish. I may be a bit biased as tennis is certainly my favorite sport to watch out there, but you don’t need to have a great interest beforehand to enjoy this one. It’s also a great character study, well two of them in fact, and when the film finally focuses on the final, i.e. the sports action, you will be curious enough for the winner to enjoy it too. They did a magnificent job in depicting McEnroe as much more than a villain and I want to applaud the writer Ronnie Sandahl here in particular. It’s a script worthy of an Oscar nomination, even if it probably won’t get one anywhere. Editing was top-notch too with how they included some old footage. By the way, it almost felt like a sports version of Thor vs. Loki, but that’s a random thing that just came to my mind. And finally if you watch the film again, you will see some statements by supporting characters that showed the direction in terms of who would triumph eventually (Borg’s love, the other American player in the cabin after the QF etc.) So yes, this is one of the best 2017 films I have seen so far without a doubt. I recommend the watch. Highly.
