Weed Delivered By Bicycle Is Just Better Weed
Just try and not like Josh Brener. I dare you. There is probably some clinical psychological algorithm out there that can prove that anybody who can honestly say that they just don’t care for Josh Brener lives firmly and breathes deeply within the spectrum of sociopathy. Filthy animals. But enough about Josh…
You know that sunken feeing that comes with scrolling through the never ending purgatory of the mediocre garbage movie collection that your streaming service is trying to pawn off onto you as a diverse collection of art, when in reality it’s nothing more than a mediocre garbage movie collection? It’s awful.
Then there’s that equal and opposite feeling you get when a movie catches your eye right away, you’ve never heard of it before that moment in time, you take a leap of faith, give it a go, and it’s pretty damn good. Well, that’s what this one was like.
Having lived in Brooklyn for the best years of my life, I’ll admit I can be biased concerning movies filmed on location on my old stomping grounds. But that’s not enough all by itself, so I’m glad to be able to say that this had more to offer than some nostalgic graffiti and familiar street corners.
It had a workable plot, a likable protagonist, a foxy female lead, an indirect (but sure) message that natural drugs are inherently superior to pharmaceuticals, a modest running time, and an agreeable pace.
Not to mention that warm fresh towel among men, Josh Brener. I mean, COME ON PEOPLE! I’ll be damned if that guy doesn’t belong at the tippity top of the top ten most likable cats in the USA list. Though I did catch myself several times throughout the movie wondering what would happen if Josh Brener and Paul Rust ever found themselves at the same party. Awkward.
If I had to make a complaint, it would be that the third act is a bit forced, and gets more than a little more “Basketball Diaries” than it needed to get.
But whatever. If the premise doesn’t repel you on contact, then I don’t see why you wouldn’t enjoy this pleasant little springtime afternoon nap of a movie.
Did I mention Josh Brener is in it?!
5 stars because it’s hard to love the main character
Scenario is ok, filming is ok, girlfriend is fantastic but the main character is … boring. It’s not possible to have empathy for him so you’re happy that this movie ends (pretty quickly) and it could have been much, much better …Anyway, the kind of movie to watch home on a rainy day!
