Monstrous – but not a total monstrosity.

Antartica, and an expedition is about to uncover a battleground for Aliens and Predators.

Whoever wins, we lose! So ran the tag line for Paul W. S. Anderson’s prequel (?) to two fanatically worshipped franchises. Little was Anderson to know that it was the majority of cinema goers who would feel that they had “lost” their cash on coming out after watching this miss-matched effort. Though in truth nobody could seriously have expected a film to rival the best of both serials (Alien, Aliens & Predator), it’s still right that us fans should expect the formula to be respectfully adhered too. We want character build up, we expect a group dynamic to function, and we definitely want the baddies to stay just that, as baddies.

It’s not a total loss, though, even as Anderson all too quickly hurtles towards his “humans caught in a cube like puzzle box” blood bath, there is just enough back story and anticipation to tickle the tongue. In fact, when it all goes pear shaped and Xenomorphs, Pred-Rastas and humans are all lined up for slotting, it’s damn near exciting stuff. While the pyramid/cube/maze design is pretty awesome. However, then the plus points are vanquished as the film quickly becomes kiddie friendly as gloop gives way to strawberry jelly, featuring a turn of events with our “heroine” that’s so clumsy I’d be surprised if Anderson sleeps at night.

Still, it’s obvious that Anderson loves both franchises and he in no way would have wanted to make a stinker. But he has made a very average movie, one that’s got two things in its favour. One being that is the neat middle section, the other that it’s not half as bad as the messy hack job that was AVPR: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem in 2007. 5/10

If Paul WS Anderson had just taken a moment longer to look at the casting here, he might have had a decent property. A solid conflict between the ultimate ninja “Predator” and the ultimate killing machine from “Alien”. Why didn’t he? Instead, we find a truly C-list bunch of acting fodder exploring a temple wherein, aeons ago, these two titans of terror battled it out. On arrival in the sacrifice room, they inadvertently release some eggs, and some “Predator” creatures, and soon some of them are on the menu for both as a battle royal looms. The special effects are good, and the action elements work fine too. I even found myself taking sides – just not with the humans, who deserved every tortuous chewing, stabbing and nasty involuntary caesarians that they got. It’s paced well, it looks eerie and sinister, and the ending is quite exciting – it’s just a real shame the writing and the acting are really mediocre. Teed up for a sequel too – I can only hope it ups it’s game for that!

Not sure why it got such a bad mark from most people
I went into this expecting a horrible movie. From all the reviews that I read I thought it would be HORRIBLE! I’ve seen many, many worse movies than this.

A previous comment stated the movie went a bit too fast in explaining things and developing the characters. While I can certainly agree on the former, the latter, well, you just know most of the people are going to get wasted so character development isn’t that necessary. We came to see Predators hunt and fight with Aliens.

One thing I didn’t like was the movie showed the Aliens more powerful than the Predators. I believe the canon shows the Predators are much more powerful than the Aliens. Regardless, I liked this movie.

This movie surprised me because there were many things I didn’t expect. Were some scenes over the top? Absolutely, but this is Hollywood and we’re talking Aliens V Predator here 🙂 IF you are a fan of these genres you really should give this movie a chance.

Underrated
While I think that the first Alien and Predator movies of the respective franchises are classics and deserve their lofty status, as far as the individual franchises go, I’ve never been a fan of any of the sequels, the exception being Alien:Covenant, a pretty good movie, in my opinion. But it’s really this movie ALIEN VS PREDATOR (2004) which connects the 2 franchises that’s always been a guilty pleasure of mine and over time I’ve come to like it as a genuinely good film. As far as favorites go, AVP is probably my 2nd favorite film to watch in the universe only behind the original Predator.

AVP is an entertaining linear tale that doesn’t try to be anything other than a fun action piece. It stars the gorgeous Sanaa Lathan as the protagonist Lex Woods, a world famous explorer, who is tasked to lead an Antarctic expedition to the site of an ancient pyramid that’s hidden under 3000 feet of ice. Lathan is pure bravado and confidence start to finish, but still displays moments of believable caution and fear at the site of danger. She’s not some fake, unrealistic female badass as so many modern films try to perpetrate on the viewer. She’s convincingly athletic, agile, and sporty and neither she nor any of the other characters do a bunch of dumb stunts that take you out of the movie.

The supporting cast, led by the iconic Lance Henriksen (who originally played the android Bishop in Aliens) as billionaire adventurer Charles Weyland, are all very likable and appealing. While the script is cliche with a hodgepodge of the typical trope cast of an Alien/Predator movie (the no-nonsense leader, the agreeable love interest, the company person, the nerdy scientist, the macho tough guy, the butch female, the non-talking lackeys), I never found myself cringing at any of their lines and found all the characters easy to root for. Also, the action scenes are very well staged in the labyrinthine underground pyramid tunnel setup where most of the story takes place. The Alien and Predator designs look top class and their fight scenes are awesome.

In fact, as far as franchise merging goes, I would rank AVP as the best of the lot, definitely way better than that Freddy vs Jason nonsense. I’m frankly surprised by AVP’s low rating on this site. It’s in the mid 5s and at the very least should be pushing the 7 rating. I rank it even higher, a 9, for being an unapologetically fun action adventure piece that doesn’t insult the viewer’s intelligence and gets better over time.
