The music is gawd awful.
5 stars for the completion of a story arc and film about an unfortunate byproduct of the messiness of living in a society where “Free Speech” still prevails, sort of. I can’t say I walked out of my viewing experience feeling one way or another about the main character being showcased, and showcased he was. I mostly watched out of curiosity much akin’ to my youthful days on rottenDOTcom, not wanting to, however seeking out a glimpse behind the “human” equivalent of a grainy beheading video in the early days of the internet. I think a part of my curiosity was piqued as I enjoyed the filmmakers last documentary about the incels finding their way out of the gamer chair and into a femcels heart. I was secondarily piqued by the fact that I have found the story arc of 20 to 30 something influencer type babe(s) flirting with the darker troupes of “edgy” “right wing” commentators and pundits to be something to look into as its ripple effect of social media, podcast discussion, and documentaries like this one give credence to such disheartening societal troupes. Again, I can’t say I walked away from the film feeling that much more enlightened on the subject at hamd. My main take aways was “Alex Jones is an unfortunate passionate slime human” to which my understanding would be that anyone who gamed capitalism and “fame” in such a manner would likely be, and the music in this film was absolute nightmarish brain scraping portal to hell. Again I entered the film with kinda high artistic expectations, especially in regard to the aforementioned incel film, Ariel Pink did an amazing job with that films score. Alex’s War is a bummer of a war, and set to a garbage fire of a musical score.
Pretty Astounding
Encapsulating this guy into one movie is a huge feat, this film accomplished it. It meanders a bit in the middle and probably could have been 20 minutes shorter or 20 minutes longer, but it never left me bored or feeling left in the dark. The story is among the most American tales ever told- a man builds a media empire himself based on patriotism and often unhinged devotion to questioning and conspiracy. His evolution takes a toll and he clearly has physically and mentally been through a journey. I enthusiastically recommend it.
