intelligent witty and gripping thriller set against a stunning backdrop – Hawaii
Unfortunately I had seen a spoiler review, by accident, prior to watching this, which did diminish some of the suspense in this film for me. However, in retrospect, I don’t understand many reviewer’s comments about the two halves of the film (before the murderers are revealed) and them not acting in accordance with knowing they did it. I didn’t see that at all, and they were clearly concerned about people knowing they did it. What did confuse me, however, was WHY they were doing what they did, and whilst there were clues, some aspects were not given and to me they were the ones that I was questioning! I was surprised at the film having seen the trailers as they seemed quite (cleverly) misleading. It is, all told, a suspenseful film in that you don’t know how the nefarious pair will be caught and how many/who will survive. Though in saying that it is a little bit Hollywood and largely predictable and the twists were seen coming a mile away. Perhaps I can say that with hindsight given that I did know some plot points ahead of time but even so, to me it was obvious anyway. I guessed quite a few things and was glad how it ended up.Hawaiian born, Timothy Olyphant was just superb, believable and constant, and convincingly teamed with Kiele Sanchez who was feisty and super-cool. I’ve liked everything I’ve seen Steve Zahn do and this was no exception, I think it showed him as a brilliant actor to be so varied, chameleon-like and in such an action role where he is usually associated with geeky characters (love him in Reality Bites). Mila Jovovich was also great – in fact all the actors were well formed, interesting and generally believable making for a good ensemble cast in a gripping action thriller. I’d have liked to have seen more of the Chris Hemsworth and Marley Shelton couple.
The SFX people did a good job with all the bloody wounds, mutilations and injuries, they were very impressive and I became quite squeamish at a few. I thought it was wonderful to see the calm, beauty and grandeur of Hawaii as a backdrop for quite an ugly story. Whilst I didn’t quite get a motivation for all the misdeeds that went on, it was still a very good watch and the script was clever, witty (making fun of typical action film blunders, I just thought something like “he’d have run out of bullets” and the guy goes and says, “I should have been counting my bullets” etc) and intelligent. A film is always getting an extra point for referencing Cool Hand Luke!!
A PSA to stay on the map
A Perfect Getaway plays just like a B-movie thriller that comes on in the late hours of the night on channels such as Chiller, USA, or WCIU. It is simple, interesting, effective, and unobtrusive complimented by solid performances from more than capable actors, and, for once, follows the textbook section of the thriller manual that shows you how to create an environment and surroundings. Not plot points. This will be a sort of difficult film to explain. We are met with three couples. One of them are newlyweds Cliff (Zahn) and Cydney (Jovovich), celebrating their honeymoon at an abandoned beach in Hawaii. The second couple is a tad unsettling. They are “Iraq War veteran” Nick (Olyphant), who dubs himself impossible to kill, and Gina (Sanchez), who always believes in her husband. The third couple is even more unsettling. They are sweet and inviting Cleo (Shelton) and straight-laced, tough guy Kale (Hemsworth).
When Cliff, Cydney, Nick, and Gina are in the middle of their hike, they are informed of a grisly double-murder in Honolulu. Do they turn back? They believe they’re safe and continue on, each couple growing more and more on-edge in fears and assumptions of the other one. The film packs in a twist at the end that I doubt many will see coming. It’s fast, out of the blue, and completely unexpected. It wraps up nicely, yet is not without questions.
One could dub the film a work of the “slowburn” thriller genre, and that’s definitely the correct statement. We get about forty-five minutes of leniency, occasionally punctuated by some chilling moments, before we dive into a lot of the hefty, twisty business. There is a great sequence of shots around the middle of the film that involve Cliff and Nick going hunting in the wilderness, while the ladies stay back for small talk which gradually increasing into larger talk. The scenes are strung together in a sort of order that remind of how the reality show Survivor is edited. The mood I felt throughout the scenes was isolation and confusion. The characters are trapped on a beach, in the drizzling rain nonetheless, in the company of people they aren’t wholly familiar with, in a place just the same. The scenes capture intensity and fear very well, relying on the scenery to take effect, as well as the worthy backstory.
Again, this is a thriller that accompanies many shots of woodsy cinematography. Everything is shot extremely vividly and very clear, capturing the ominous feeling of being lost and worried in a place you’ve never been before. I recently spoke with a friend about my sour feelings towards the first two Hostel films. I feel the first two parts are almost anti-travelogues, like they are meant to show the seamy sides of unfamiliar places, at the same time, adding xenophobia into the mix. It makes other countries out to be the scum of the Earth, and it feels like the film is subconsciously telling us to be afraid of overseas countries rather than optimistic. A Perfect Getaway is shot in Hawaii, and rips up the postcards and cutesy pictures of luxurious paradise we’ve been shown a countless number of times.
This is a straightforward crime thriller up until the last twenty minutes, usually when thrillers become dry, lazy, and uninspired. Instead, A Perfect Getaway becomes an involving journey and throughout its runtime, is motivated by great performances from the cast (especially Olyphant, who continues to choose off-beat roles and play them pitch-perfectly with the right amount of seriousness and downright fear). This is a well-made thriller and that’s all there is too it. It knows what’s important and knows what isn’t and proceeds from there.
