Cliché but…
Well… To be fair I went into this movie fully expecting it to be a half star affair, but wow this was actually cute. Literally none of the main characters in this movie are unbearable which is unheard of in this genre.
“Ken” and “Barbie” on a Ranch Is One of the Worst Movies I’ve Ever Seen!
First off, like many people have already pointed out, this is NOT a Christmas movie. It’s set around Christmas time, but that is pretty much it.Second, I’ve seen a lot of movies in over 46 years, and this is easily one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen. And that includes a lot of Hallmark films and others. I doubt I was supposed to cringe and set my jaw throughout most of the painful scenes; painful in how poorly performed they were.
I’ve never seen Lauren Swickard in anything. And now I know why: because I can’t figure out if she’s worse as an actress or as a writer. That’s a tough one to weigh.
The plot is about as cheesy and cornfed as anything I’ve ever seen. Someone stated that it took her a couple of weeks to write. It sure feels like it. Half-hashed and half-fleshed out story that, for the life of me, actually got made into a movie. Further proof, that in this industry, it’s about who you know and not what you know.
Joseph is a spoiled rich boy sent by his rich mommy to convince a woman to sell her farm for the purpose of using it for shipping warehouses. Hmm…all of that land all over the place, and they decide to target ONE. I asked a friend who works in a large corporation about something like this. He laughed, and for good reason. He said, “whoever wrote this knows nothing about corporations, I guess!”
Callie is the lone woman on a dairy farm. I’m still trying to figure out how she did all of that work with all of those cows by herself, let alone doing it with ONE ranch-hand. Her moods and emotions also flip faster than a jackrabbit on a hot date. One second, she’s cold and unsympathetic, and the next, she’s suddenly smiling and cheerful. Perhaps she’s bipolar.
Most of the acting performances feel forced and ungenuine, especially by Lauren Swickard. David Del Rio easily turns in the best and most natural job of the entire cast.
Oh, and I think I saw the worst bar-fight in history in this movie! So bad, I was laughing, and not in a “it’s funny” way.
And we also have Callie in teeny-tiny shorts (that’s what you wear on a dairy farm, right?) or super tight jeans, aiming her backside at Joseph. And not to be sexist, we also have Joseph shirtless, in a wet shirt, and taking off his shirt as well. All in slow-motion, of course!
And, of course, the story has all the typical cliches present: lying boy meets girl. Girl initially doesn’t like boy. Girl suddenly decides she likes boy. Girl finds out truth about boy. Boy pulls off “miracle” to help girl. Girl forgives boy. Sound familiar?
Give me a Hallmark movie, or even a bad TV movie any day over this farce. If I were a studio exec, I’d be sure to put down Swickard’s name as a, “never accept any of her material again.” Being a bad actress is one thing. Being a bad writer on top of that…that’s just criminal.
