One of most cliche movies ever made
I LOVE the idea of women being respected FYI and practice this in my life BUT this movie was very cliche, the dialogue expresses views that have been heard elsewhere. The story was boring and the dialogue did not elicit my sympathy. The cinematography was dull and monochrome in a lame way. The acting was played with a “we are activists” mentality. The themes elicited moments of pity but were muddled with manipulative and didactic dialogue and storytelling. Sad to see high caliber actors pandering to feminists.I must say quickly that the houses and props used in the film looked great! The set designer was awesome and should get credit. Another thing the film has going for it is that its story follows a contemporary American propoganda quality in a good way. The Academies will probably award it for meeting this mark which can be good or bad depending on your philosophy on the use of mainstream media, but I digress!
This is a great time in the US to show stories that empower men and women, but this takes a story from another south american country and tries to make it an American problem. The director doesn’t seem to achieve what they intended.
Was shocked to find Brad Pitt as a producer behind such a one-sided take on gender with this film. Ultimately, that’s what I yearned for most from this film and from films of late is another perspecitve or at least a more balanced perspective. This was wayyyyy to one sided.
O how I love Rooney Mara. Sarah Polley has a unique voice
The majority of the film takes place in a barn, where several women literally talk out loud their issues regarding women’s safety, consent, and religious faith. But it doesn’t seem boring at all, with interjecting flash-backs that cut to the field for a change of scenes. The premise works well and reminds me of “12 Angry Men”. Rooney Mara shines as Ona; she is the queen of humanity. Every actress contributed some heart-felt moments, even the seemingly least likeable character. There is no weak link in this film.Even when I missed the opening scene because I was late, this film still touched my heart. Sure the dialogues are heavy, but it’s intelligent in its discussion of faith, responsibility, and love. I’ve never seen Sarah Polley’s other work, but this film showcases her skills very well; and if this is the tone and direction she wants to go with, I can’t wait to see what she makes in the future.
