Beautiful Disaster
This movie, from start to finish, is a bit of a disaster. The actors range from overactor to not an actor, to a varying degree. Their characters are hyper-stereotyped however, so it sort of works. The setting is pretty good, and the storyline a fantastic pile of myth drivel. The Wolf is… Bad… Like, really Bad. Pure B movie bad and then some. The only thing this movie really lacks, is a generous helping of self- deprecating humor. But if you’re not too hung up on it, it’s actually a lot better than a few choice titles of recent, better budgeted, horror movies. And if you can forgive the terrible effects, it’s actually slightly reminiscent of American Werewolf in London.
So. Expect nothing, and you will be rewarded.
“Could you stop acting like idiots for once!”
An uninteresting group of people are chased by an uninteresting monster around a disused area once used for experiments by evil Nazi scientists during the war. The monster is a dog/wolf/man hybrid and looks pathetic, which is why it is mostly seen as a shadow or in close-up. Scary as a puppy. The cast are uniformly underwhelming and unsympathetic. You look forward to them being devoured by the wolfish thing. The musical score is either dreary solo piano or whining synthesiser and adds nothing to the tension. The shaky hand held camerawork is just confusing sometimes. When two of the escaping characters, who must have had names but were not memorable, finally reach the car one thought, I bet the monster is in the back seat. And lo it was, lurking there unseen despite being huge. Stupid scene. And the ending you could see coming a mile away. The only bit I liked was that one of the characters, a musician, was called Spike Jones. That made me laugh.
