Synopsis

Watch: Lonbraz Kann 2014 123movies, Full Movie Online – The close down of an old sugar mill in Mauritius, calls into question the lives of Marco and his friends, a group of former workmates in their mid fifties. In this country where sugar cane has always been the nourishing mother earth, the characters find themselves suddenly trapped between inescapable modernity and living conditions they find it all the harder to accept. The last sugar canes are cut down, revealing new ephemeral horizons and the deep ties that unite them all..
Plot: It is the end of an era. Marco, Bissoon and their friends have spent their lives working for a sugar factory that is due to close. Sugarcane is no longer profitable so it will soon be replaced by luxurious villas, golf courses and playgrounds for rich tourists, making this area forbidden for the working class. As their world seems to fall apart around them, some struggle to find their places in their strange new surroundings, while others decide to leave the country. For Bissoon, the closing of the factory brings frustration, emptiness and neo-colonial malaise. Meanwhile Marco gets intrigued by Devi, the wife of the authoritarian man overseeing the demolition of the factory. Continuing his work of putting Mauritius on the cinematic map, David Constantin tells a story of a move from tradition to modernity. In doing so, he offers a view behind the postcard façade of paradise, portraying the world less picture perfect than you might think.

Gorgeous!
As someone who grew up Hindu in India, I knew noting about Mauritius. Only recently I found out that Mauritius is one of the three Hindu majority countries in the world. The other two being India and Nepal. My desire to learn more about Mauritius led me to this movie and luckily the English version was available on Amazon Prime as “Sugarcane Shadows”. I started watching the movie with very little expectation but to my surprise this was a treat. The movie is set in a very small village in Mauritius where sugarcane farmers/workers of Indian and African descent are out of jobs due to the area being taken over by a builder who wants to build a resort. The movie beautifully depicts the emotions of an older Mauritian of Indian descent. His ancestors were brought to the Island to work on the sugarcane fields. The landscape depicted is beautiful. It is a crude reminder of how far removed people are in cities from experiencing real connection with land, real emotions and people. There are moments in the movie that get you excited about the turn of events yet leaves you with you no option but to accept the sequence as it is because there’s isn’t much going on – yet its so beautiful. This is very different from anything you’ll ever watch. I would recommend this 100% for anyone who’s looking for a soft, slow, and a serene sneak peak into a unique setting, its people and culture.
