Reviews:

Lots of horror franchises eventually reach the stage where they just kind of go “You know what? Fuck it. You’re going to space.” That direction is a little more natural in _Critters_ than with other series, seeing as the titular badguys are themselves from space. But it’s still a little odd to jump forwards in time like they did. Seems like the sort of thing that would kill forward momentum in the series. Which I guess it did, seeing as it took another 27 years for another _Critters_ to come out after this one, when we had the first four come out in a six year stretch. I guess it was more important to have humans in space to save money on this film than make another one. When that human cast contains both Brad Dourif and Angela Bassett though, it’s hard to complain too much.

_Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._

though for someone who hasn’t seen the rest of the series and doesn’t really like space movies this was kinda fun

SPOILER –
but i’m sad in a movie about killer little creature guys that brad dourif died by laser gun?? just like that?? i don’t like seeing him die in movies to start but come on at least make it cool

Terrible cheesy sequel!
What I like about the movie is that the Critters are back in this supercharged sci-fi space adventure! But these are no ordinary Critters they’ve a super strain of genetically engineered mutants designed to take over the universe. This time they’ve hungry to conquer the galaxy, with an appetite for mankind that’s out of this world. There are scenes where a malfunctioning computer traps a character in an elevator, characters are nearly jettisoned into space from a garbage disposal, malfunctioning doors force characters to climb through access panels, there’s an attempted rape from a drunken ship captain, the lingering threat of a nuclear core meltdown… even the climax of the film fails to account for the Critters, as the big moment is a standoff between Charlie and Ug.

And can you believe how many “good” actors have appeared throughout the Critters franchise? Everything from popular voice actors (Scott Grimes) to scream queens (Dee Wallace) to niche personalities (Eddie Deezen) to Broadway superstars (Terrance Mann) to talented character actors (Brad Dourif) to motherfucking Leonardo DiCaprio. And that’s not even getting to Billy Zane, M. Emmet Walsh or Angela Bassett, all of whom have offered celebrated performances in their time. And even the actors who didn’t go on to become big names are all highly competent; there really isn’t a performance in any of these movies that made me want to pull my hair out. Call it an act of providence, but the Critters series is more than solidly cast from beginning to end and that’s.. that’s just phenomenal, considering the material we’re discussing.

Anyhow, Critters 4 had the resources to be a good Critters movie, but it didn’t want to be a Critters movie, so it wound up just sort of amounting to nothing. There are good moments sprinkled about the film and I enjoyed the stuff with Charlie and Ug, but most of it is just boring and frustrating.

Overall rating: 4 out of 10.

Kills off the franchise that arguably should have ended two movies ago
It seems that there is an unwritten rule when it comes to horror franchises that are teetering dangerously on the edge of bargain-bin hell. When the basic premise has been stretched so far that it is well past the line of self-parody, just transport the action to space. The Hellraiser franchise did it, the Friday the 13th films came to an embarrassing end with Jason X (2001), and even the Leprechaun series tried it, all to no avail. With the charm of the crites, or ‘critters’, all but disappearing by the time Critters 2 (1988) came around, it was never going to be long until the red-eyed killer pillows found themselves drifting through the cosmos.

We were given a brief glimpse at the next instalment at the end of Critters 3 (1991), which was shot back-to-back with number 4, as the recurring, hapless bounty hunter Charlie (Don Keith Opper) found himself face-to-face with the last remaining crite eggs but halted from exterminating them by his alien friend Ug (Terrence Mann). It is against intergalactic law to cause a species’ extinction and so Charlie is ordered to place the eggs in a preservation capsule but manages to stumble into it himself, and they are blasted off into space where they float around for 50 years. Luckily, or unluckily, for Charlie, he is found by a junk ship who are ordered by the Intergalactic Council to take their prize load to a nearby station to await further instruction.

It is here that the crew of archetypes spend the bulk of the film bickering amongst themselves, and the film takes its sweet time for douchebag captain Rick (Anders Hove) to finally lose the plot and open their cargo, unleashing the crites on the unsuspecting bunch. Wasting an impressive cast that includes Angela Bassett, Brad Dourif and Twin Peaks’ Eric DaRe, Critters 4 is just plain boring for the most part. With the crites themselves barely registering until the climax, the film stumbles around looking for interesting sub-plots to distinguish its characters but ultimately, like most movies of its ilk, ends up just ripping-off Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979). A whimpering end to the Critters franchise that arguably should have ended two movies ago, although I’m sure a Hollywood remake is inevitable.
