Pressing play, I wasn’t really expecting much from Breaking Them Up. Family movie about a teenage boy whose parents fight so much he’s had enough. At school, he and his adoptable friend are talented love matchmakers. These two are presented with challenges, see opportunity and act upon it. .. Much to the benefit of their friends. But when the boy stages the plan to separate his parents, wanting to make his own life better, she is conflicted. And that’s the core of the movie. What I was absolutely not expecting, yet amazingly surprised and gripped by, was the depth of feelings and connections expressed between each and all of these characters. The writing was fluid. Conversations were easy, natural, and enjoyable even when their content was difficult. Each scene had a purpose and I was always curious what would happen next? Watching our scope of freedom building, I was afraid of where I thought this might lead. I feel these choices could’ve been inspired by somebody’s real life choices. In the end, satisfied and smiling, I feel I have a better understanding of other people’s relationships, desires, and motivations. Few other shows have moved me like Breaking Them Up moved me.
