Monster Island, a syfy original movie from 2019. Wow, I gotta say the CGI is so bad I know it isn’t a movie with a huge budget but still it looks like it was made 15 years ago. The acting ain’t that bad, it’s slightly below average for me at least.
The story is good though I love me a good kaiju movie, especially one where a ton of monsters appear and starting destroying shit everywhere. If this was a bigger budget movie I would probably love it more. But the cheap looking graphics take away any enjoyment I might have had.
It’s not the worst movie ever but I’m still not average either so I gave it one stars.
I’ve seen worse, though that’s not to say this isn’t bad – it most certainty is.The premise is fairly interesting but, as usual with films from the The Asylum, the special effects and overall acting let it down massively. With that said, the actors are probably the most noteworthy part – I’d say the performance are, mostly, better than your average production of this type.
Natalie Robbie (Sarah), Jonathan Pienaar (Mato) and Margot Wood (Rena) are alright, while I always like seeing Eric Roberts (Horne) in a film. The onshore locations look quite nice, also.
As for the downsides, the score and pacing are two issues. Alongside that, you’ve got the already mentioned poor CGI but also the dialogue; which is very basic. ‘Monster Island’ definitely has more cons than pros, unfortunately.
Not horrific, but not at all good either.
Bad, bad babies
Two employees of marine researcher Billy Ford (Adrian Bouchet) discover a giant starfish on the ocean floor which has lava for blood. Annoyed by the submarine, the starfish rises to the surface, slaps a couple of ships and then decides to head for the coast to lay eggs. Ugly little dragons are hatching from these eggs and start to puke lava at anyone they meet. Bad, bad babies! General Horne (Eric Roberts) summons the army in vain to solve the monster problem. Billy Ford, however, meanwhile simply attempts to find a bigger monster and arrange a battle of the two…Another ludicrous ‘Pacific Rim’ rip-off from the Asylum factory line which was ok most of the running time (I voted 4 of 10). The actors were passable, some locations looked good, for example the Swiss cheese caves, the pacing was never lame, and the effects were what you expect from suffering similar experiences.
My Gawd
And not in a good way. Holy smokes Eric Roberts! This dude seems to have this personal goal that is very important to him. That goal is to make sure in every movie that he appears in, it’s going to be worse than the one he was in before that. He has been attaining that goal for over twenty years. Way to go Eric. He says as long as people will continue to pay him, he will keep on keeping on. Everyone involved in the making of this movie should be embarrassed. I have a feeling though that Eric is not one of them. The dude has no shame.
