Don’t go in expecting riotous laughs
Clearly a personal project for writer/director/star Chris Rock, Top Five isn’t quite a comedy and isn’t quite a drama. It nestles snugly, firmly into the in-between, dispensing funny little slices of life alongside serious, self-searching notes about midlife insecurity and the desire to make something more of yourself. Rock basically plays himself, a longtime comedy superstar who worries that his silly wide-appeal earlier works have trapped him in a vicious cycle of self-loathing and alcoholism. His character is grounded and real, afraid to play anything for big laughs because the pressure to meet earlier comedy heights is so crippling. For the most part, it’s the story of his swift rapport and burgeoning relationship with a tailing New York Times reporter (Rosario Dawson), which clicks on all cylinders. The two work so well together, it can be enjoyable just watching them interact over the inconsequential, and that’s the real draw. Don’t go in expecting riotous laughs; it’s funny, but also sweet, and an effective stepping stone to broader subjects.
Funny, Charming and Thoroughly Entertaining
Top Five marks the return to form of Chris Rock. Having been out of the spotlight for the past decade or so and only doing Sandler comedies such as Grown Ups, it is really great to see him return with a film like this. Top Five is undeniably funny and Chris Rock’s script is so subtly satirical, it strikes a perfect balance between telling a story and developing well rounded characters. Featuring Rock himself with the likes of Tracy Morgan, Rosario Dawson, Top Five works very well as a character ensemble as well. Telling the story of an aging comedian who wants to do serious work within the Hollywood machine despite everyone telling him it isn’t going to happen. You can’t help but feel this project is personal for Rock. He didn’t only write and star in it, but he directed the hell out of it as well. The best thing about Chris Rock as a director is that he knows what is funny and what is fatty material that can be cut out. Top Five is a brisk film and moves quickly, the jokes are sharp, the satire is hysterical and the performances are brilliant all across the board. There isn’t much more a comedy can offer nowadays. Today’s standard of comedy usually features Seth Rogen, Kevin Hart or Will Ferrell. While these three are talented in their own rights, it isn’t the comedy of Chris Rock. The comedic films today are not edgy, they are safe and don’t take risks. Chris Rock takes a huge risk here and it pays off ten fold. Top Five is a great film that should be enjoyed by audiences alike. It really has the perfect balance of comedy and satirical edge, it really is mesmerizing to see Chris Rock back on top of his game after years of wandering in mediocrity. Despite those past films, Top Five also sheds light on what Rock thinks of the industry in general and it is truly hilarious and, at the same time, hateful. This is great writing, great acting, great direction and an all around great comedy that definitely should be given a chance.
