Universal love story on top of original characters with a Ukrainian folk topping
Being mostly raised on Disney’s cartoon in a post soviet Ukraine I must admit, that this is the first cartoon of its kind(made in Ukraine) that deeply touched my stale, selfish ego.Even though the film was in production for something like 3 years, and was postponed for release several times (the last, probably due to the war), I like to admit that the final result is remarkably good.
Needless to say, that international viewers will miss some real fun & insights related to local (modern) Ukrainian culture, due to translation(as this always happens), but I hope, that the most important senses will get positive acclaim.
P.s. The movie is based off a classic poetic play, called “The Forest Song” by Lesya Ukrainka, which all Ukrainian kids study in mid-school.
Animation shrouded in violence
While I’m very sensitive to the atrocities plaguing the country, this children’s animation is using the absolute wrong medouk , format and audience to deliver it’s inuendo. It’s a cute kids movie that’s full of violence, weapons and political agenda, masked as a family movie.
Let’s leave the war and poltiics to the adults, and let kids keep a vivid imagination of wonder and hope.
The word “Kill” “boom stick” and the show of knives, killing, and guns is ridiculous.
This isn’t a documentary on war crimes, but it may as well have been.
Notwithstanding, the animation is commendable and the studio deserves acclaim for their work.
The script writer, however, not so much.
We need to do better than telling political stories to little kids.
