Over the decades countless movies, plays, books, comics, video games, and

television shows have depicted Vampires in various mythos which often
include differences in behaviors, abilities, and, motivations. While there have been many Vampires, none have ever achieved the fabled
status of Dracula who has been the template ever since Stokers’s book and
the classic original film as well as subsequent appearances. In the new film “Renfield” audiences are introduced to Renfield (Nicholas Holt), who recounts his past as an ambitious lawyer who ended up serving
Dracula (Nicolas Cage) as a Familiar when his original intention was to
close a real estate deal. After his Master is injured after another attempt by Vampire Hunters,
Renfield relocates Dracula to New Orleans and looks to find suitable prey
to help his master return to full power.

This in turn leads Renfield to a self-help group as he plans to help the
poor souls there by using their tormentors as prey for his boss which he
hopes will in some way eliminate the burden that has built over the
decades from his servitude. This plan goes horribly wrong when he attempts to subdue an abusive
individual and his group lands Renfield on the radar as not only an eager
a police officer named Rebecca ( Awkwafina), and a drug lord named Edward
(Ben Schwartz). Mixing humor, action, and gore aplenty, Renfield must also deal with his
rising self-help motivations as he looks to stand up to his boss once and
for all and have his needs heard and respected which naturally does not
sit Weill with Dracula.

What follows is an amusing, chaotic, and gory adventure that while at
times inconsistent and meandering with the story; still finds enough ways
to entertain.

Cage hams it up to new levels in his portrayal of Dracula and he is
literally chewing the scenery in every scene in which he is featured and
it is one of his most enjoyable performances in recent years.

Hoult, Awkfwafina, and the supporting cast work well, and while the film
does get more than a bit loose with the story and gaps in logic even for a
film of this type it still manages to work. Dracula talks of a big plan
for world domination but we get little more than lip service which would
have helped to make this version of Dracula a more defined character.

The focus is more on comedic action than horror and it is clear that the
the cast seemed to be having a great time with their roles so as long as you
are willing to overlook issues with the plot; you may find “Renfield” one
of the more enjoyable comedic outings of the year.

FULL SPOILER-FREE REVIEW @ www.firstshowing.net/2023/review-chris-mckays-renfield-is-precisely-what-its-expected-to-be/

“Renfield is yet another movie that provides precisely what it promises – with an unbelievably ridiculous, purposefully silly story about the toxic relationship between Dracula and Renfield, expectedly elevated by the “OTT King” Nicolas Cage and an up-to-the-challenge Nicholas Hoult. The light, humorous environment leaves space for action sequences that are also intentionally excessive in all technical elements, which makes the entertainment levels inconsistent due to the continuous blend of quick cuts and outrageous amounts of blood. The dedication of the stunt team deserved better and much more screen time. Still, if you’re a Cage fan, you won’t be disappointed.”

A Weird Mix of Genre That Doesn’t Amount To Much in The End
A really weird concoction of a lot of different genre that I kind of have to admire for taking a Dracula/Renfield story in a direction you wouldn’t expect but in the end I just think it amounts to a lot of mediocrity because that story they chose was just so weak.

It’s basically 3 movies in one and everything to do with Nicolas Cage giving a perfectly hammy performance as Dracula I really liked but in addition to that it also takes the direction of being a crime/mob thriller and a pretty generic one at that and all of the rom com stuff I just couldn’t have cared less about.

I love myself a good amount of blood and gore in my action movies and Renfield delivers that in spades so whenever there was a fight scene I was at least entertained. I really liked the central trio of Cage, Hoult and Awkwafina and I suppose the central message of the movie is a valid one but it’s so broad it feels childlike in its approach and I can hardly imagine people taking their kids to a movie like this.

Maybe I’m overthinking it a bit because the film was fun enough time but I just thought the filmmakers wasted their perfectly cast Dracula on a script that doesn’t know what it wants to be and I can’t help but be a bit disappointed in that.

My needs are the only thing that matters….
Renfield, the tortured aide to his narcissistic boss, Dracula, is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding.

However, after centuries of servitude, he’s ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of the Prince of Darkness……

If a film ever had a USP, then it has to be this film. Nicolas Cage as Dracula! What a genius move. It’s as genius as the move to release the Popes Exorcist in Great Britain on Good Friday. Renfield will sell itself, because Nicolas Cage is Dracula.

So why did a leave the cinema feeling somewhat disappointed? It certainly wasn’t the first 10-15 minutes, as this is a beautiful homage to Tod Browning and Bela Lugosi’s camp classic, literally ripping scene after scene from that film, and in doing this so good, the film could only go downhill from there. We are treated to Cage in full floating pandemonium, just about to enter the mouth of a priest, and this is what I wanted for the rest of the film, Cage in full Mandy/Vampire’s Kiss/Face/off mode. And I got a fully restraint Cage.

And this is selfish of me, because I am the Pedro Pascal of Cage fans, and i wanted to be spoilt with an off the scale Cage. But it’s a good job there is so much more here to get your teeth into.

Holt holds his own as the titular servant, playing an almost Hugh Grant type fop in his delivery, and he’s very funny, and very vulnerable at the same time. Awkafina shows up, and she is loud. So loud that she gets kind of boring after a while, like that screeching thing that led that Found footage movie Dashcam last year.

There is a good story here though, and a pretty deep message about being in an abusive relationship. And the narcissism that Dracula exudes is pretty bang on, making him quite intimidating at times.

Before you know it, the mob want to join forces with Dracula to take over the world, and when the action is on screen, it’s deliriously over the top, and limbs go flying all over the place, and faces literally get ripped off in some parts.

So its a great film, with lots of fun to be had, but I wanted more Cage, and seeing as he was playing the most famous vampire in the world, I just felt a tad disappointed.
